His most famous novel is ‘Heart of Darkness’ (1899), which was inspired by his experiences on the open sea. He also wrote the classic novels 'Lord Jim' and 'Nostromo'. Among countless film and TV adaptations of his work were 'Apocalypse Now', a Vietnam War movie based on 'Heart of Darkness', and 'The Secret Agent', starring Bob Hoskins and Patricia Arquette.

It is a series of tableaux or, changing impressions within a singular scenic structure. The first part explores the relationship between HIM and HER against a background of Catholic religious iconology. The piece explores the theme that everyone needs to believe in something that can make a sense of the life. The two protagonists have rejected institutionalised religion and are consumed by existential angst. They are constantly reaching out for something that can justify their existence. The second part explores the idea that a solution can only ever be found by reaching 'inside' of ourselves. Despite our significant technological advancements, our enormous knowledge and our endless material comforts - it seems to me that we still find it difficult to be alone with ourselves. In point of fact, more than thirty years after creating Shadowline II, the situation has become worse. Today we hide behind technology, where we avoid direct contact with each other and we live in the cold world of virtual reality where we pretend to be 'not alone'. Until we have come to terms with the simple act of being at one with ourselves, we will never pass through the shadow-line of more than 2000 years of human development. .

The purpose of this book is to tell a good story, but the goal of this re-write is to give some hope to those who find themselves addicted to any of the many addictive elements of our society. An alcoholic himself although sober now for thirty years, Kananen discovered that his years spent drunk were lost years. The idea behind this revamped story is to encourage people to live their lives in such a manner that they can remember what they have done.Marvin Kananen is a former teacher, a retired missionary who lived among the Maasai people of northern Tanzania for twelve years, and a biblical cruciverbalist (maker of Bible-based crossword puzzles). A Finn, born in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a graduate of Suomi College (now Finlandia University), Pacific Lutheran University, and Oakland University, Kananen has fished commercially, served as a pastor, taught college English, wrote ten published books, lived a dozen years in a ten-by-ten square hut in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, finally married at the age of forty-four, and currently lives in Bellevue, Washington with his wife and canoe.
