Stone Fighting has been engrained-hammered into me. It's something I know all about, yet wish I knew nothing at all. For the last seventeen of my twenty-seven years, hurt has fueled my desire in the ring. But I want better. I've paid my dues. I want far away from this life. I thought I finally had my chance and then corruption threatened to take it away. I'm no stranger to challenge; it just makes me more determined to come out on top-of my world and her. She thinks we're from opposite sides of the track, and she's right. But we're both blinded by pain, and I see hers. I've fought plenty of fights and Lydia Norberg may prove to be my strongest opponent yet. Lydia I craved a man's hands on me for no other reason than pure, unadulterated lust. No hidden expectations of more, just pleasure, anything to take my mind off my reality and send me into orbit around a brighter place. So I took a chance by attending an Elite party-young professionals looking for sex, no strings attached. At first glance, they all looked pretty boring until I saw him. I only knew him as Stone, no last names, no personal information exchanged; those were the rules. Little did I know, he represents everything I desire and everything I fear.

In the summer of 1919 three men (two white, one black) decide that the Chicago White Sox will be the first major league team in the twentieth century to sign a black player to a major league contract... Set before the broad shoulders of Chicago, Shadow Ball tells the story of Rube Foster, African American owner of the Chicago-American Giants; Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox; and Sam Weiss, their silent go-between. Their plans are complicated by the eruption of the August 1919 race riot in Chicago, as seen and heard by Kid Douglas, a Mississippi blues singer newly arrived from the Delta. Blues, baseball, race-relations, love, hope and despair ring loud in this tale.

The one thing Sylvie Townsend wants most is what she feared she was destined never to have--a family of her own. But taking in Polish immigrant Rose Dabrowski to raise and love quells those fears--until seventeen-year-old Rose goes missing at the World's Fair, and Sylvie's world unravels. Brushed off by the authorities, Sylvie turns to her boarder, Kristof Bartok, for help. He is Rose's violin instructor and the concertmaster for the Columbian Exposition Orchestra, and his language skills are vital to helping Sylvie navigate the immigrant communities where their search leads. From the glittering architecture of the fair to the dark houses of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods, they're taken on a search that points to Rose's long-lost family. Is Sylvie willing to let the girl go? And as Kristof and Sylvie grow closer, can she reconcile her craving for control with her yearning to belong?

Released in 1965, Sergei Paradjanov's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a landmark of Soviet-era cinema--yet, because its emphasis on folklore and mysticism in traditional Carpathian Hutsul culture broke with Soviet realism, it caused Paradjanov to be blacklisted soon after its release. This book is the first full-length companion to the film. In addition to a synopsis of the plot and a close analysis of the many levels of symbolism in the film, it offers a history of the film's legendarily troubled production process (which included Paradjanov challenging a cinematographer to a duel). The book closes with an account of the film's reception by critics, ordinary viewers, and Soviet officials, and the numerous controversies that have kept it a subject of heated debate for decades. An essential companion to a fascinating, complicated work of cinema art, this book will be invaluable to students, scholars, and regular film buffs alike.

The Substance Of Shadow written by John Hollander and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

John Hollander, poet and scholar, was a master whose work joined luminous learning and imaginative risk. This book, based on the unpublished Clark Lectures Hollander delivered in 1999 at Cambridge University, witnesses his power to shift the horizons of our thinking, as he traces the history of shadow in British and American poetry from the Renaissance to the end of the twentieth century. Shadow shows itself here in myriad literary identities, revealing its force as a way of seeing and a form of knowing, as material for fable and parable. Taking up a vast range of texts—from the Bible, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton to Poe, Dickinson, Eliot, and Stevens—Hollander describes how metaphors of shadow influence our ideas of dreaming, desire, doubt, and death. These shadows of poetry and prose fiction point to unknown, often fearful domains of human experience, showing us concealed shapes of truth and possibility. Crucially, Hollander explores how shadows in poetic history become things with a strange substance and life of their own: they acquire the power to console, haunt, stalk, wander, threaten, command, and destroy. Shadow speaks, even sings, revealing to us the lost as much as the hidden self. An extraordinary blend of literary analysis and speculative thought, Hollander’s account of the substance of shadow lays bare the substance of poetry itself.

Nicholas Hawksmoor (1662–1736) is one of English history’s greatest architects, outshone only by Christopher Wren, under whom he served as an apprentice. A major figure in his own time, he was involved in nearly all the grandest architectural projects of his age, and he is best known for his London churches, six of which still stand today. Hawksmoor wasn’t always appreciated, however: for decades after his death, he was seen as at best a second-rate talent. From the Shadows tells the story of the resurrection of his reputation, showing how over the years his work was ignored, abused, and altered—and, finally, recovered and celebrated. It is a story of the triumph of talent and of the power of appreciative admirers like T. S. Eliot, James Stirling, Robert Venturi, and Peter Ackroyd, all of whom played a role in the twentieth-century recovery of Hawksmoor’s reputation.

I consider myself lucky to have grown up on Racine Avenue in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago's near west side. It was the late 1940's, the beginning of an exciting new era and, in my opinion, the perfect place and time to be a kid. More and more families were buying their first TV, their first car and some of the lucky ones even were getting central heating, eliminating the need to pour fuel oil into the stoves used to heat their homes. Like many Italian families, ours was top heavy with aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends we considered as extended family. Whether it was Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter or the rare St. Joseph's Table, our house would be bursting at the seams with family and friends. Of course, being Italian, each holiday came with time-honored traditions which had to be followed to the letter. Dad, being a home movie fanatic, thoroughly documented these special times in his endless reels of 8 and 16 mm film. Dad was a worker for the Bureau of Sanitation in Chicago and was the bread winner in our family, but Ma was its heart. She cleaned, cooked, took care of us kids and kept Dad in-line, all while working a full time job. How she did it, I have no idea. As kids, our top priority was having fun. Whatever the season, we were outside as much as our parents and daylight would allow. We played hard and we played rough. Sure, we scraped our knees, got cuts, bloody noses and, on occasion, had to make a trip to the emergency room at St. Joseph's Hospital to set a broken bone or, in my older brother's case, have his tongue sewn back on. We took all it in stride. If that was the price we had to pay, so be it. Schools back then had little tolerance for kids who acted up. There were rules to follow and we were expected to obey them. If one of us caused trouble, it was a guaranteed trip to the principal's office or, in some cases, getting suspended for a few days. Recently, I visited the various neighborhoods where I grew up on Chicago's west side. Memories of family, friends and events always come to mind but never as strong as they did when I visited Racine Avenue. Here they over-powered me and sent me back to my days as a kid in this wonderful, old neighborhood. After Dad got up in years, and wasn't able to drive anymore, he was always asking my brothers or me to take him back to his childhood home in Joliet, Illinois. When we would arrive he'd jump out of the car and a big smile would appear on his face. He'd then proceed to start showing my brothers and me all his old haunts. I used to wonder why visiting his old neighborhood in Joliet affected Dad the way it did. It has taken a lifetime, but now I think I understand. I finally decided I had to write a book detailing my life on Racine Avenue and the other neighborhoods we lived in. Each move meant leaving old friends, making new ones, starting new schools and a host of other challenges that seemed overwhelming. I can remember there were some great times and other times that weren't so great. However, in looking back, I wouldn't have changed it for the world.
