In this original, wide-ranging, and endlessly thought-provoking work of popular nonfiction, a leading science writer uncovers the pervasive presence of shadows in our world. For Plato, shadows were the symbol of our limitations. For Galileo, they knocked the Earth from the center of the cosmos. They are a source of fear and a symbol of ignorance, and they loom large in art and design, mythology and folklore, physics and metaphysics, and architecture and urban planning. From shadows puppets and the psychology of shadows to the role of shadows in astronomy and the influence of shadows on the architectural profiles of our cities, Roberto Casati awakens our fascination in this tour-de-force of investigation and imagination.

The Abstract And The Concrete written by Peter van Inwagen and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-11 with Philosophy categories.

The Abstract and the Concrete presents nine essays in ontology by Peter van Inwagen. Three of the essays concern topics in meta-ontology: the idea of multiple modes of being; Carnap's idea that the questions of "ontology," insofar as they are meaningful at all, are questions about which linguistic frameworks it is expedient to employ; the concept of one object's being metaphysically more fundamental that another. Three of the essays concern various topics that pertain to the author's "lower-case" or "lightweight" platonism. (According to lightweight platonism, there are attributes-necessarily existent universals. These attributes are not constituents of substances, they cannot enter into causal relations, and it is false that an F object is F in virtue of instantiating the attribute of being F.) The remaining three essays examine proposed answers to particular ontological questions: the question of the validity of mathematical fictionalism; the question whether it is analytic that at any place at which some xs are arranged chairwise, there is there a chair; the question of what it means to say that colour is an illusion, and whether (in the sense determined) colour is an illusion.

C Zanne S Shadows written by Nancy Locke and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-22 with Art categories.

Modernism has often been described as a rejection of the art of the past, but Cézanne’s Shadows makes an eloquent case for precisely the opposite artistic practice. In this book, Nancy Locke argues that the idea of a modernist forgetting would never have taken hold if the modernist painters themselves, and Cézanne in particular, had not wrestled so fiercely with the work of their predecessors. Cézanne routinely interrupted his work with a model to go back to the Louvre or to consult sketches and studies he did after the old masters. Exploring the importance of Cézanne’s involvement with the art of the past in essays devoted to Poussin, Chardin, and Rubens, Locke argues that Cézanne’s art cannot be understood without an investigation into what he made of these earlier models and how they continued to haunt even his mature work. Cézanne’s Shadows offers an elegant new model for understanding the relationship between modernist painting and the creative tradition it often feigns to reject. This study of artistic ambitions and an analysis of nineteenth-century art writing will be especially valuable to scholars of modernism and European art history.

An autobiographical story that picks up where Literati ends, The Comma Sutra is about the art of saying goodbye to things that no longer serve us, giving ourselves permission to become our highest dreams, and letting true love make us whole again. Dreaming-Bear believes our souls originate from the silent nothingness of experiences that leave us with an utter sense of wordlessness a moment symbolized by the comma. These are the moments that make us drop our jaws in awe at the sheer enormity of what is happening, moments of brilliance, mistakes, tragedy, beauty, rage, and tranquility. Regardless of how many words we speak to one another, they all somehow eventually become lost in the silence. The Comma Sutra explores those wordless moments in which true enlightenment is born.
