Excerpt from Shakespeare's London So much time and study have been given of late to the surroundings of Shakespeare and his fellow dramatists, that everything in connection with Elizabethan times is of considerable interest to a large class of people. Though it is true that many, if not most, of the following facts are to be found in modern works or reprints, it is also true that they are so scattered as to be available only after the most prolonged search, and so inaccessible as to be out of reach of one who has not access to a large library. Furthermore, no work of the present kind has yet appeared, if we except the contemporary Survey of London by John Stow. Some recent attempts to accompany prints of old London with letter - press have resulted in inaccuracies that render the works wholly useless to the person who wishes to be well informed. The present writer has attempted With great care to verify his facts and to draw as largely as possible upon contemporary sources. Excerpt from The Study of Shakespeare For some fifteen years I have conducted classes in the study of Shakespeare at the University of Indiana. I early found that great advantage was derived from an intimate knowledge of the social conditions that obtained at the time the plays were written. My attempt to furnish some assistance in this direction by the publication of an account of Shakespeare's London and of the people of Eliza beth's generation has given me confidence in the preparation of a handbook designed differently from many now in use. Though criticism of the plays forms the larger part of the following pages, I have had no intention of writing a volume of criticism. The book is not intended to be read on its independent merits, but in conjunction with a study of the texts. Though I hope it will be of interest to those already familiar with the plays of Shakespeare, it is primarily ad dressed to students. Excerpt from A Study of London in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth Under the tide "Shakespeare's London" I delivered a lecture in 1886, and again in the winter of 1887. Another lecture on the same subject, delivered at the Working Men's College in 1893, I entitled "Elizabethan London," partly because, in this lecture, I drew a contrast between Victorian London and the London of Shakespeare, but chiefly for the reason that I was then meditating the book which now sees the light, and reserved the title for this occasion. The book has grown out of these lectures, and it covers all the ground specially emphasised in each of them. Its scope may be readily indicated by the themes of the lectures. In the first, I dealt chiefly with the theatres in Shakespeare's London. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from William Shakespeare This book is written partly for the use of people who are reading Shakespeare, and partly to encourage the study of the plays. Though the plays are the greatest things ever made by the English mind it cannot be said that the English reverence their poet. There is no theatre in London set apart for the performance of Shakespeare. There is no theatre in London built for the right production of Shakespeare. There are not in the empire enough lovers of Shakespeare, or of the poetical drama, or of poetry, to take the British stage from the hands of ground landlords, and make it again glorious with the vision of the pageant of man. These are sad things; for art is the life. Art is the thought of men with vision. When art is scorned it is a sign that the men without vision are in power. "Where there is no vision the people perish." Worldly Empire has always been gluttonous and foolish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Self In short, Stratford was a thriving, busy, bustling little town 3 by no means sleepy full of active, alert men and women, workers almost all; a centre of life and trade to the neighbouring villages, in many of which Shakespeare had close relatives. Both in the ordinary affairs of life and in his work, the dramatist showed throughout his career his love for and full knowledge of his homeland, and a never-sated thirst for the sights and scenes of his boyhood. All his London time he showed keen interest in the doings of his fellow-townsmen and in the local politics of Stratford. In the end he returned there to spend his last days. Stratford was always his home. His contemporaries showed their appreciation of this fact by their never naming him in connection with London's Thames but with the Avon Of Stratford. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Lost Years in London, 1586-1592, Giving New Light on the Pre-Sonnet Period: Showing the Inception of Relations Between Shakespeare and the Earl of Southampton and Displaying John Florio as Sir John Falstaff The defeat of the Armada ended a long period of threat ened danger for England, and the following fifteen years Of Elizabeth's reign were passed in comparative security. The social life of London and the Court now took on, by com parison with the troubled past, an almost Augustan phase. During these years poetry and the drama flourished in England as they never did before, or since, in any such space of time. Within a few years of the beginning of this time Shakespeare became the principal writer for, and later on a Sharer in, a company of players which, at about the same time, was chosen as the favourite Court company a position which - under various titles - it continued to hold thereafter wards for over forty years. When we compare the plays of Shakespeare with those of his contemporaries and immediate successors, it becomes evident that this dominant position was maintained by his company largely through the superior merit of his work while he lived, and by the prestige he had attained for it after he had passed away.
