Excerpt from Shanghai Considered Socially: A Lecture The first mention we find of the name, Shang hai, is in the year 1015. The town is first spoken of as Shanghai chin, meaning, the market of Shanghai. The word Shanghai is generally ad mitted to mean up from the sea or the upper sea. But sometimes the characters are transpos ed, in which case the name Haishang means upon the sea. All these names indicate that what gave the city its importance was its favour able position as the seaport of the immense and productive region stretching inland. As the natural outlet for the rich products of Keangnan, and of the valley of the upper Yangtse, and as a convenient emporium for the interchange and transhipment of the products of the North and South, we cannot wonder that Shanghai rapidly grew in importance. In 1250 it was made the seat of a district college; in 1360 it attained to the dignity of a hien or district city; while in 1570 the irruptions of the pirates of Japan led to the erection of its walls, towards the building of which we are told that the inhabitants contributed very readily. This book focuses on urban development in Shanghai over the past four decades, which is composed of two major development processes—the development of new spaces and the renewal of old ones. Seeking to bring the concept of space back into social analysis, the book explores changes affecting communities, interpersonal interactions, lifestyles and social mindsets in Shanghai from a spatial perspective. What’s more, all these social themes are presented using a narrative of spatial representation and spatialization. The book combines both academic and documentary-style contributions. It also provides cutting-edge research on the most representative case in Shanghai. As the book demonstrates, the story of social spaces in Shanghai is more than a combination of social analysis and spatial analysis but also involves historical analysis and contemporary narrative.

Shanghai Past And Present written by Niv Horesh and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-01 with History categories.

This book sets out to explain how Shanghai emerged from relative obscurity in 1842 to become one of the world's best-known finance and industry hubs. As China's largest city, Shanghai today plays a central economic role, much as it did in the 1920s. The author provides a concise diachronic survey of the economic history of modern Shanghai, setting out how the city's urban infrastructure, municipal institutions, consumer culture and industry have shaped, and have been shaped by, this economic power house. The work is aimed at a broad readership of all who are interested in Asian history, and tackles a range of themes including: the city's millionaires, then and now; racial tensions and quotidian liaisons between Europeans and Asians before World War II; and the gambling and prostitution industry. The post-war era is portrayed in comparative discussions on Shanghai under Mao Zedong, and during the reform era. These discussions bring the narrative up to date to cover important events such as the designation of the Pudong precinct as the city's new engine of growth in 1991. The city's illustrious pre-war past is compared with its present ambitions to become Asia's leading financial centre. The book employs insights from studies frameworks of new institutional economics as well as from the development trajectory of other world cities by way of better understanding Shanghai's historic distinctness, its relative weaknesses and contemporary strengths.
