This book should be read with a wee whisky or tea. If you are ready to laugh and help get out the present and get to 60 years ogo be my guest. It will take you back to a time in Scotland when everybody liked a story as they do now. The stories in this book happened when Billy and I were charging through our childhood. All the stories are 95% true. 5% Imagination. Was it Einstien Who said imagination is more important than knowledge. It has been commented on how most people love the Scottish language. This book is about the Glasgow accent. A true story happened when I dropped Billy in the deep end when our teacher miss Gleason explained that the priest had heard everything before in confession and not to worry about asking him questions. I of course told the priest Billy wanted to ask him a question. After the question the class went wild with shock. Billy and I went on a school trip to Aberdeen and on the train met two girls from another school. We made a date at the age of 14 to meet them in Aberdeen. What happened then and the results could only be described as over the moon. Midge raking is another tale not to mention visiting my uncle Jackie who was a butcher who when my eyes were shut dropped a sheep’s eye in my open hand. When Billy asked for the eye in his hand all hell broke out side the shop with people going crazy. Visiting my grandad and seeing his leg he lost in WW1 was a highlight especially when he was robbed of his leg on nightshift. Paddy was a super dog and when he bit off the policeman’s pants goes down on history. He was Irish and hated Scottish policemen. Going to school one day we met up with the wee Italion Leo. His stories about his capture by a Scotsman who also captured 40000 others makes my heart bleed. Paddy to the rescue Peer group pressure The Big Steamer Hogmannae. Stories of Billy and me

The Language Web written by Jean Aitchison and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Language is like a vast spider's web. In this volume Jean Aitchison explores the different facets of this web. She begins with the cobweb of false worries which surrounds language. She then discusses how language evolved in the human species, how children acquire it, and how educated English speakers remember 50,000 or more words. Finally, she argues that people are right to be concerned about language, though not in the ways traditionally assumed. This is the text of the 1996 BBC Reith lectures, slightly revised for publication, with illustrations and full references, and an afterword which looks at the reception of the lectures.

The Bonfire of the Vanities defined an era--and established Tom Wolfe as our prime fictional chronicler of America at its most outrageous and alive. With A Man in Full, the time the setting is Atlanta, Georgia--a racially mixed late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth, avid speculators, and worldly-wise politicians. Big men. Big money. Big games. Big libidos. Big trouble. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta real-estate entrepreneur turned conglomerate king, whose expansionist ambitions and outsize ego have at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 28,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife--and a half-empty office tower with a staggering load of debt. When star running back Fareek Fanon--the pride of one of Atlanta's grimmest slums--is accused of raping an Atlanta blueblood's daughter, the city's delicate racial balance is shattered overnight. Networks of illegal Asian immigrants crisscrossing the continent, daily life behind bars, shady real-estate syndicates, cast-off first wives of the corporate elite, the racially charged politics of college sports--Wolfe shows us the disparate worlds of contemporary America with all the verve, wit, and insight that have made him our most phenomenal, most admired contemporary novelist. A Man in Full is a 1998 National Book Award Finalist for Fiction.

What stories are told about teaching and learning on TV and in film? And how do these stories reflect, refract and construct myths, anxieties and pleasures about teaching and learning? This collection looks at how pedagogy is represented on screen, and how TV programs and films translate pedagogic ideas into stories and relationships. International in scope, with case studies and analysis from the UK, US, Australia, Turkey and Brazil—the book adopts a critical stance in relation to the ways in which theories of learning and myths about education are mobilized on screen. Teaching and Learning on Screen: Mediated Pedagogies provides a stimulating addition to the field of media and cultural studies, while also promoting debate about particular pedagogic models and strategies that will contribute to the professional development of educators and those involved in teacher education.

The revolutionary appeal of Communism in 20th-century Britain is analyzed in this examination of why Communist Party members joined, how they participated in the party's activities, and why, in many cases, they left the party. Archival resources, hundreds of interviews, and sociological analyses document the nature of left-wing activism in Britain from its earliest incarnations to the schisms of the 1980s. The role of Communism in British politics and society is illuminated by discussions of constructions of political authority; the role of gender, generation, and social class; and the significance of political space and mobility in recruitment.
