Disguise and Recognition in the Odyssey reveals the significance of the Odyssey's plot, in particular the many scenes of recognition that make up the hero's homecoming and dramatize the cardinal values of Homeric society, an aristocratic culture organized around recognition in the broader senses of honor, privilege, status, and fame. Odysseus' identity is seen to be rooted in his family relations, geographical origins, control of property, participation in the social institutions of hospitality and marriage, past actions, and ongoing reputation. At the same time, Odysseus' dependence on the acknowledgement of others ensures attention to multiple viewpoints, which makes the Odyssey more than a simple celebration of one man's preeminence and accounts in part for the poem's vigorous afterlife. The theme of disguise, which relies on plausible lies, highlights the nature of belief and the power of falsehood and creates the mixture of realism and fantasy that gives the Odyssey its distinctive texture. The book contains a pioneering analysis of the role of Penelope and the questions of female agency and human limitation raised by the critical debate about when exactly she recognizes that Odysseus has come home.

Female Characters play various roles in the Odyssey: patron goddess (Athena), seductress (Kirke, the Sirens, Nausikaa), carnivorous monster (Skylla), maid servant (Eurykleia), and faithful wife (Penelope). Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, this study examines these different female representations and their significance within the context of the poem and Greek culture. A central theme of the book is the visualization of the Odyssey's female characters by ancient artists, and several essays discuss the visual and iconographic implications of Odysseus' female encounters as depicted in Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art. The distinguished contributors--from the fields of classical studies, comparative literature, art history, and archaeology--are A.J. Graham, Seth L. Schein, Diana Buitron-Oliver, Beth Cohen, Sheila Murnaghan, Lillian Eileen Doherty, Helene P. Foley, Froma I. Zeitlin, H.A. Shapiro, Richard Brilliant, Jenifer Neils, and Christine Mitchell Havelock. Feminine in orientation, but not narrowly feminist in approach, this first interdisciplinary work on the Odyssey's female characters will have a broad audience amongst scholars and students working in classical studies, iconography and art history, women's studies, mythology, and ancient history.

Odysseus, one of the war heroes, has still not arrived in his home country of Ithaca ten years after the Trojan War and the Fall of Troy. Odysseus is presumed dead, leaving his wife Penelope and son Telemachus to deal with a gang of wild suitors vying for Penelope's hand in marriage who have overtaken his palace and pillaged his country. Odysseus, however, is still alive and being held captive on the island of Ogygia by Calypso, who is madly in love with him and longs to make him her everlasting husband. How is Odysseus going to get home? Will he find his beloved Penelope again? The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus' "nostos" trip back home, expanding Homer's vibrant image of everyman's journey through life. It is the second-oldest piece of still-existing Western literature.

A Part Synopsis of Pacific Odyssey Lane The book is something of a Travelogue with a deal of Adventure thrown in. It is also a multi-faceted Love Story. The setting is in the Far East Singapore, Borneo and New Guinea (or more properly today Irian Barat) and briefly in Papua. The period is around 1970 to 1980ish although this is a moveable feast according to the readers preference. The plot concerns Lane Martin, a pretty young English girl, and her husband Paul, an electronics wizard based in the Singapore offices of the British Electronics Corporation, a wholly fictitious business concern. The two are about to embark upon a lengthy holiday aboard the cruise liner Pacific Explorer. There is a lot of eating and drinking of good food, fine wines and - iron rations (!) scattered throughout the story, commencing with the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Paul is an experienced pilot and owns his own Cessna 172, 4-seater aeroplane in which they fly, via Kuching, to join ship in Banjarmasin. Pilots will hopefully fly with them, whereas non-pilots will have an insight into the marvels of aviation and, who knows, some may take up the past-time? Those who have no experience of Maritime voyaging may well enjoy the luxuries of life aboard the Pacific Explorer, perhaps even those who do have the experience might find, somehow, a kinship with the passengers. If you have been crew you will know what it costs to provide both former and latter with the pampering entailed. However, our passengers are clearly enjoying the amenities of the ship and the wonderful ports they visit. Sadly, even the best must bow to the likes of a short, swarthy man of middle-eastern appearance. I wont spoil the fun. Suffice it to say our intrepids, Lane and Paul, find themselves, quite suddenly, in a different sort of boat. Now they must learn the art of survival under extremes of conditions. Lane has lost her sight, how is in the story! And this is where the excitement really begins.....

The Odyssey Of Ibn Battuta written by Professor David Waines and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-01 with History categories.

Ibn Battuta was, without doubt, one of the world's truly great travellers. Born in 14th century Morocco, and a contemporary of Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta has left us an account in his own words of his remarkable journeys throughout the Islamic world and beyond: journeys punctuated by adventure and peril, and stretching from his home in Tangiers to Zaytun in faraway China. Whether sojourning in Delhi and the Maldives, wandering through the mazy streets of Cairo and Damascus, or contesting with pirates and shipwreck, the indefatigable Ibn Battuta brings to vivid life a medieval world brimming with marvel and mystery. Carefully observing the great diversity of civilizations which he encountered, Ibn Battuta exhibits an omnivorous interest in such matters as food and drink, religious differences (between Christians, Hindus and Shi'a Muslims), ideas about purity and impurity, disease, women and sex. Recounting the many miracles which its author claims to have experienced personally, his al-rihla or 'Travelogue' is a fascinating mosaic of mysticism and reportage offering a prototype magic realism. David Waines discusses the subtleties of the al-rihla, revealing all the wonders of Ibn Battuta's world to the modern reader. This is a gripping treatment of the life and times of one of history's most daring, and at the same time most human, discoverers.
