L'assassinio di un critico teatrale non dovrebbe suscitare eccessivo scalpore. Dopotutto la categoria non è nota per attirare simpatie, e non esiste forse mestiere più indicato se uno vuole farsi dei nemici. Sherlock Holmes tuttavia non è solito accontentarsi di ciò che appare ovvio al resto del genere umano, e quando l'amico George Bernard Shaw, promettente commediografo, gli sottopone il caso di Jonathan McCarthy, accetta di prenderlo in esame. La scena del crimine è tale da impressionare perfino un medico di lungo corso come Watson. Occhi e bocca spalancati in un raccapricciante grido silenzioso, la vittima è stata pugnalata nel suo studio con un tagliacarte d'avorio. Poco prima di morire dissanguata, ha afferrato un libro da uno scaffale, probabilmente per lasciare una qualche traccia utile alle indagini. Pane per i denti del segugio di Baker Street. Soltanto lui, guidato dalla stella polare di una logica infallibile, saprà orientarsi in una vicenda dagli sviluppi inattesi e spaventosi. Elaborando una soluzione che nessun ispettore di Scotland Yard, tantomeno il povero Lestrade, sarebbe mai in grado di concepire.

Non deve allarmare il fatto che Sherlock Holmes e il dottor Watson siano in viaggio per la Svizzera, diretti alla famigerata cascata del Reichenbach. Se si recano laggiù non è per rivivere i terribili eventi di quattordici anni prima, bensì per immortalare il grande detective sulla scena dello scontro fatale con il professor Moriarty in una fotografia per lo "Strand Magazine". Caso vuole tuttavia che il direttore del dipartimento di Fisica dell'Università di Berna abbia un problema da sottoporre all'illustre forestiero. Si tratta di scavare nel passato di un giovane fisico che aspira a un posto da docente. Tale ricerca si è resa necessaria dopo la comparsa di strani messaggi anonimi relativi al candidato. Difficile per Watson nascondere una certa perplessità. Che cosa ci sarà mai d'interessante nelle questioni interne di un ateneo? Di sicuro non gli omicidi o le cospirazioni a cui il buon dottore ha abituato gli affezionati lettori dei suoi resoconti sulle pagine della rivista. Sbagliato. A Holmes basta appena un indizio per capire che li attende invece una missione nella cupa e impenetrabile Serbia d'inizio secolo. E un'indagine non può che riservare scoperte dirompenti quando l'indagato si chiama Albert Einstein. All'interno, il racconto "Sherlock Holmes e l'assassino dagli occhi di vetro" di Lucio Nocentini.
