Los Wiwa son uno de los cuatro pueblos indígenas que heredaron la antigua cultura tairona y que habitan la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Entre ellos es el más reducido y el que menos atención ha recibido por parte de la academia hasta ahora. La actividad cultural de este pueblo es múltiple, pero es tal vez en su música (“Shihkakubi” en demana, la lengua Wiwa) donde se expresa con mayor concentración y representatividad su identidad y cosmovisión. Su música tradicional pertenece de por sí al ámbito de lo sagrado y se ejecuta exclusivamente en determinados contextos rituales, siempre supervisados por los mamos que son las máximas autoridades espirituales del pueblo. No obstante, también existe una música profana que se ejecuta en fiestas y bailes, en la que juega un papel importante la mestización de los músicos, de los contenidos y de los ritmos. El vallenato y otros ritmos costeños se amalgaman con la tradición y se naturalizan como Wiwas. Fabio Miguel Fuentes Hernández se ocupa desde hace años de su música. Es compositor en primera línea y la finalidad de su trabajo es sondear y vehiculizar las posibilidades inherentes a la música étnica para la composición contemporánea, partiendo en un principio de métodos propios de la etnomusicología. Comienza estableciendo un contacto fluido con la comunidad Wiwa asentada en Riohacha y realiza en consonancia con y supervisión de los mamos un trabajo de campo intermitente de varios años. El presente libro refleja su investigación: una aproximación general a la cultura Wiwa y la recopilación, transcripción, grabación, contextualización cultural y análisis de múltiples temas, tanto sacros como profanos. Su análisis musicológico y su empeño como compositor se concentran, sin dejar de lado otras formas y aspectos en formas esenciales de la música sacra: la gaita y el chicote. Su trabajo como académico y artista desemboca finalmente en tres obras de composición con detallada fundamentación teórica: “Chicote. Ronda sobre un canto Wiwa” para flauta; “Gaitas” para flauta en sol, flauta en do y carrizo indígena; y “Shihkakubi. Pieza para conjunto de cámara e instrumentos indígenas”. En este libro el lector encontrará el resultado de todo este proceso analítico y creativo.
