Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Royal Navy IN this volume I have set down the recollections of a lifetime of sixty-five years. It deals with my service in the Royal Navy during a period of over half a century. I entered it when most of the ships were propelled by wind, steam being only an auxiliary; our gun carriages differed little from those of Queen Elizabeth's day; midshipmen were punished in peculiar ways, and seamen received the cat for comparatively minor offences. In 1913 I was retired at my own request, and I thought that my active career had ended. I was mistaken, for, as these pages record, I was drawn into the back waters of the War and became associated again with gunnery matters, with the fight against the enemy's submarines, and with the defence of London against aircraft, rendering to the best of my ability what service I could do to the country. I should not have decided to issue these chapters, which I began writing by way of recreation and amusement after I had gone on the retired list, if I did not hope that they might serve a useful purpose in future years. Armies are made up of men like ourselves (only better). They advance as we do, by putting one foot before another, on the solid earth. Their movements are followable, even if we cannot always understand them daily bulletins are printed in the public Press. But the Navy keeps its secrets. Not only have we no notion where it is, but we should be little the Wiser as to its inner purposes if, scanning the illimitable and capricious waves, it should be our fortune to descry here and there a flotilla of its dark grey hulls. Even in harbour most men pointing out a cruiser to their children say That's a dreadnought -a state of confusion bred and fostered by the strange, dark, dangerous element in which the Navy has its being. Excerpt from A Text Book of Naval Architecture: For the Use of Officers of the Royal Navy The vertical fluid pressures are the most important, as these give the buoyancy which supports the ship. Since any number of parallel forces may be supposed replaced by a single force - or resultant as it is termed - acting parallel to them and equal to their sum, it is only necessary to determine the magnitude of this resultant and the position of its line of action, in order to find the effect of all the vertical pressures upon the ship. Before. Proceeding to do this, one or two definitions will be given. The centre of gravity of a body may be defined as the point through which the weight of the body, when at rest, may be supposed to act, in a direction vertically downwards. When a ship is immersed in water, it occupies a certain Space which would otherwise be filled with water the quantity of fluid so dislodged is called the displacement, and may be measured by its volume in cubic feet or its weight in tons in the former case it is known as the volume, and in the latter the weight of displace ment. Fleet in All Classes of Ships; Revised and Enlarged This war was the connecting link between the past and the present Navy. It was the death-blow to our wooden walls and gave birth to the ironclad. The terrible effect of shell against wooden structures was realised in one quarter at least, and from that time it was evident that fleets in future would have an entirely different character. There was no gradual evolution, but a leap from the 120-gun wooden line-of-battle ship to the iron frigate carrying one quarter the number of guns but burdened with over a thousand tons of armour four inches thick. Such was now to represent the power of nations at sea, and which, with the same advance in dimensions as characterised the wooden ships from one century to another, has continued to do so up to the present time. Though I do not intend to dwell otherwise than briefly upon our early ironclad fleet, it is useful to recall one or two of the characteristics of the first representative.
