The exhibition and the catalogue deal with the topic of the staging of reality and replication and reconstruction in art, taking the example of Edward Hopper. The film "Shirley" addresses inter-alia the fact that Edward Hopper did not reproduce reality in his paintings, but instead combined individual set-pieces to create a fictional reality, a method that is also inherent in the medium of the film. In the course of the three-dimensional life-sized transformation of 13 Hopper paintings for the film, pictorial and sculptural artefacts were created that were combined into sets to produce the illusionist reality of the film.0The catalogue is a work of reference and a retrospective of the exhibition "Visions of Reality" by Gustav Deutsch and Hanna Schimek and the film "Shirley" by Gustav Deutsch. The catalogue consists on the one hand of text elements: "Topics of the film and the exhibition" by Brigitte Felderer, "Text on the film" by Olaf Möller and an interview with the director Gustav Deutsch and the painter Hanna Schimek, conducted by Thomas Edlinger, and on the other hand comprises an extensive pictorial section: photos, making of, storyboard, sketches, costumes, lighting sketches, painting sketches, furniture sketches etc.

The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama is a collection of in-depth, substantive interviews with moving-image artists working "avant-doc, that is, making films that explore the territory between documentary and experimental cinema. The book uses the early history of the museum habitat diorama of animal life, specifically the Hall of African Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History, as a way of rethinking both early and modern cinema document--and especially those recent filmmakers and films that are devoted to providing viewers with panoramic documentations of places and events that otherwise they might never have opportunities to experience in person. This international collection of 27 interviews follows on MacDonald's earlier Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema (Oxford, 2015). The interviews, organized panoramically within the collection, are dense with information and insight, and readable by specialists and non-specialists alike. In most instances, these are the most in-depth and expansive-sometimes the first-interviews with these filmmakers. Digital technology and the Internet have revolutionized film criticism, programming, and preservation in deeply paradoxical ways. The Internet allows almost everyone to participate in critical discourse, but many print publications and salaried positions for professional film critics have been eliminated. Digital technologies have broadened access to filmmaking capabilities, as well as making thousands of older films available on DVD and electronically. At the same time, however, fewer older films can be viewed in their original celluloid format, and newer, digitally produced films that have no "material" prototype are threatened by ever-changing servers that render them obsolete and inaccessible. Cineaste, one of the oldest and most influential publications focusing on film, has investigated these trends through a series of symposia with the top film critics, programmers, and preservationists in the United States and beyond.
