Generally speaking, people do a lot more thinking about their consumer choices than their democratic choices. Little wonder, then, that politicians have been reaching into the consumer world for inspiration and tips on how to reach the citizens. In this webinar, Susan Delacourt will offer a guided tour of how politics got tied up with marketing in Canada over the last half of the 20th century, and how this paved the way for the high-tech arts of modern marketing and campaigning in the 21st century. While it may not answer who's going to win the next election in Canada, this webinar will help explain how a sophisticated salesman reached the highest political office in the United States. This webinar is part of a 3 part series called Nudge, Persuasion, and Influence: How Emergent Marketing Activities are Impacting How we Decide, What we Buy, and Who we Vote For. Vote Buying In Indonesia written by Burhanuddin Muhtadi and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-01 with Asia-Politics and government categories.

Muhtadi’s analysis of vote-buying in post-democratization Indonesia is original, profound, subtle, nuanced, and convincing as well as beautifully organized and well written. Equally important, its imaginative policy prescriptions will be widely read and cited as a significant contribution to the literature of comparative electoral politics. —William Liddle, Ohio State University, USA This book presents a pathbreaking analysis of vote-buying in Indonesia. Drawing on a stunning array of evidence, Muhtadi reveals the mechanics, patterns and effects of vote-buying with unprecedented clarity. [Title] is a must read for anyone interested in Indonesian politics or in the comparative politics of clientelism. —Edward Aspinall, Australian National University, Australia This book contains a trove of interesting research questions, a novel theoretical contribution, impressive empirical work, and a deep and nuanced understanding of the Indonesian case. —Allen Hicken, University of Michigan, USA This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book investigates the impact of vote buying on the accountability of democratic institutions and policy representation in newly democratic countries, with a focus on Indonesia. In doing so, the book presents a wide-ranging study of the dynamics of vote buying in Indonesia’s young democracy, exploring the nature, extent, determinants, targeting and effectiveness of this practice. It addresses these central issues in the context of comparative studies of vote buying, arguing that although party loyalists are disproportionately targeted in vote buying efforts, in total numbers—given the relatively small number of party loyalists in Indonesia—vote buying hits more uncommitted voters. It also demonstrates that the effectiveness of vote buying on vote choice is in the 10 percent range, which is sufficient for many candidates to secure a seat and thus explains why they still engage in vote buying despite high levels of leakage. Burhanuddin Muhtadi is a lecturer at State Islamic University, Jakarta. He is also an executive director of Indonesian Political Indicator and Director of Public Affairs at Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI). He has published his articles in numerous scholarly journals.--

The veteran presidential campaign manager recounts his many adventures, travesties, triumphs, and lessons from more than forty years on the trail. Over his long and legendary career, campaign strategist Rick Ridder has been at the center of everything from presidential death matches to the legalization of marijuana. In this lively memoir, he recounts his life on the trail from the McGovern campaign to more recent candidates and causes. Along the way, he reveals his “twenty-two rules of campaign management”―each one illustrated by entertaining, instructive, and mostly true stories from his own experiences. Rick offers an unsparing, often hilarious self-portrait of the political guru as a young man, criss-crossing the country from one drafty campaign headquarters to the next, making mistakes and pulling rabbits out of hats, wrangling temperamental celebrities, winning some elections and losing others. Through his stories, you’ll meet the state legislature candidate who said he’d win thanks to his reputation as a judge in cat competitions; the US Senate candidate who told the Southern press, “I hate southern accents”; a young Senator Al Gore who campaigned for President in 1988 by eating his way through New York City alongside Mayor Koch; Leonard Nimoy, good-naturedly trekking through rural Wisconsin in Rick’s own Jeep because Rick was too young to rent a more appropriate vehicle; and many other colorful characters.
