Excerpt from A Short History of Italian Painting Tms little book is an answer to many inquiries for a guide to the study of Italian painting suficiently clear and detailed for the beginner and yet embodying the results of modern criticism. The methods of art interpretation during the pat fo years have been revolutionised as much as have been the met ods of literary, historical, and Biblical criticism. A true estimate of schools and masters is now seen to rest upon the correct attribu tion of individual works of art, and this attribution depends upon the expert weighing of evidence for the authenticity of examples traditionally or otherwise attributed. Although documenta evidence and the accounts of wly writers are necessarily use the main factor in identification is an intimate acquaintance with the characteristics of periods and artists gained from constant and prolonged examination and comparison of the works themselves, a study which extends itself to all the minor and unknown men whose works are scattered through every hamlet and church and private palace in Ital as well as through hundreds of private and public collections in urope and America. Excerpt from A Short History of the Art of Printing in England The object of this little treatise is to present a brief but fairly complete sketch of the history of Printing in this country. By the Art of Printing is generally understood the art of printing from moveable types. It is on this basis that I have dealt with the subject, no reference being made to Lithography, Copperplate printing, or the other processes by which impressions are obtained. As my readers will be found chiefly among the printers themselves, I have not thought it necessary to describe operations with which they are familiar. At the same time it is hoped that sufficient explanation is given to render the work intelligible to those who are unacquainted with the practice of the art. Being limited as to space, it has been my endeavour, after the introductory chapter, to confine myself strictly to the development of the Art in England, and to state all facts as tersely as possible. As, however, the work is published in commemoration of our first English Printer, I have written his biography at greater length than I should otherwise have done. Wherever practicable, I have sought the original sources of information, but want of time has prevented me from proving some dates and statements as thoroughly as I could wish. My thanks are due to Mr. William Blades, for supplying me with the means of obtaining photographic blocks of several old engravings; to Mr. Elliot Stock, for affording the opportunity of producing a facsimile of a page of the first book printed in England; to Mr. John Southward, for many valuable suggestions: and to Messrs. Koenig & Bauer, Messrs. Miller & Richard, Mr. Talbot Reed, Mr. Wm. Conisbee, Mr. W. Dawson, Mr. Samuel Bremner, Mr. J. M. Napier, and other gentlemen, for information they have given me. Excerpt from A Short Critical History of Architecture The Glossary of terms connected with architecture is, of course, not intended as anything more than an explanation of words used in this book, though a few not so used have been added; the object being not merely to give definitions but to introduce some brief critical observations which could not conveniently have been interpolated in the general text. Excerpt from A Short History of Music We have as relates to the ancient music of India only much about theory, but this is suf cient to give us an idea of the immense com plication of their musical system. The tones of the diatonic scale which they seem to have known, but whose importance as basis of a musical system they did not appreciate, were divided into semi tones, and these in their turn into other semi tones, quarter-tones, and yet smaller divisions. Excerpt from A Short History of the Renaissance in Italy: Taken From the Works of John Addington Symonds It had been often represented to my husband that his "Renaissance in Italy" in a shorter form would be acceptable to many who are without the leisure or the inclination to take up the subject in the character of students. But though, through stress of other work, he was indisposed to return to the subject, he was quite willing that our friend Colonel Pearson, who has been associated with us for some years at Davos, and who is well acquainted with Italy, should carry out his own views as to what might be interesting and useful to those who would be satisfied with the subject in a more popular form. It will be seen, therefore, that in the choice of his materials Colonel Pearson's object has been to select and arrange for those who know Italy, or hope in the future to do so, whatever may sustain or promote an interest in its history, its art, and its literature. Excerpt from A Short History of the World This short history OF the world is meant to be read straight forwardly almost as a novel is read. It gives in the most general way an account of our present knowledge of history, shorn of elabora tions and complications. It has been amply illustrated and every thing has been done to make it vivid and clear. From it the reader should be able to get that general View of history which is so neces sary a framework for the study of a particular period or the history of a particular country. It may be found useful as a preparatory excursion before the reading of the author's much fuller and more explicit Outline of History is undertaken. But its especial end is to meet the needs of the busy general reader, too driven to study the maps and time charts of that Outline in detail, Who Wishes to refresh and repair his faded or fragmentary conceptions of the great adventure of mankind. It is not an abstract or condensation of that former work. Within its aim the Outline admits of no further.
