Excerpt from Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 8: Diocese of St. Asaph In the distant days of the Plantagenets, Eyton, in his Antiquities of Shropshire, says, that Mines were worked in the Lime Rocks for silver; he bases his statement on the Pipe Rolls of 94 and 1195, which contain accounts of receipts and expenditure for some mining experiments carried on by John Le Strange of Ness, and Ralph Le Strange ofalvanley, successively Castellans of Carreghofa Castle - (within the parish of Llanymynech). These experiments were short lived, possibly owing to the small yield of the operations. But deep shafts and mounds of thrown up earth still witness to the fact that even as long ago as the time of the Romans this district was considered to possess mineral wealth, and the name Llanymynech can be translated Village of the Miners, though the Village of the Monks is another suggested interpretation. Excerpt from Shropshire Parish Registers, Vol. 8: Diocese of Hereford About the close of the tath century, Robert de Bollers, lord of Montgomery, founded a Priory of Augustinian Canons at Snead, near Church Stoke, which very soon was moved to Chirbury, the advowson of which formed a consider able part of the original endowment of the Priory The Church at Chirbury appears to have suffered greatly in the time of Henry III., probably from the Border wars, and the Canons in those days obtained from the King a Charter permitting them to remove to the Snead because Chirbury was no longer a fitting place for the celebration of the divine mysteries. It would seem, however, that they did not take advantage of their Charter, but rebuilt their Church in great part from the ruins of the old one. In 1285, Bishop Swinfield visited Chirbury, and was displeased at the lax discipline of the Canons. Matters were not better in 1286, but in 1288, on his second visit, no blame was given, and in the following year the Bishop commended the Priory for piety, charity, and hospitality. The Priory was dissolved in 1535, when Oliver Middleton, the last Prior, gave into the King's hands the lands and rents and other sources of income amounting to about g 817 a year.
