Filled with unforgettable images of Siberia's people and landscape, this fascinating, panoramic book reflects its subject's rich and complex culture. The word Siberia brings to mind a series of extremes--vast, bleak, harsh, alluring, wild, and beautiful. Our imagined notion of this largely unknown territory is so strong that the name itself has become a metaphor for things remote or undesirable. The reality, however, is that Siberia surpasses any singular idea. Not only does it span numerous time zones and feature enormously varied geography, but its inhabitants range from nomads herding reindeer and shamans communing with spirits to scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories and urbanites surrounded by boutiques, museums, and opera houses. Spanning some 130 years, this collection of images by more than 50 Russian photographers conveys as never before Siberia's enormity and diversity while bringing the region into concrete, human focus. It draws from rarely visited collections in Russian museums as well as the work of established and emerging photographers. This beautiful volume is at once a groundbreaking photographic event and a sublime introduction to one of Earth's most intriguing places.

The Siberian environment is a unique region of the world that is both very strongly affected by global climate change and at the same time particularly vulnerable to its consequences. The news about the melting of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and the prospect of an ice-free shipping passage from Scandinavia to Alaska along the Russian north coast has sparked an international debate about natural resource exploitation, national boundaries and the impacts of the rapid changes on people, animals and plants. Over the last decades Siberia has also witnessed severe forest fires to an extent that is hard to imagine in other parts of the world where the po- lation density is higher, the fire-prone ecosystems cover much smaller areas and the systems of fire control are better resourced. The acceleration of the fire regime poses the question of the future of the boreal forest in the taiga region. Vegetation models have already predicted a shift of vegetation zones to the north under s- narios of global climate change. The implications of a large-scale expansion of the grassland steppe ecosystems in the south of Siberia and a retreat of the taiga forest into the tundra systems that expand towards the Arctic Ocean would be very signi- cant for the local population and the economy. I have studied Russian forests from remote sensing and modelling for about 11 years now and still find it a fascinating subject to investigate.

Lifestyle In Siberia And The Russian North written by Joachim Otto Habeck and has been published by Open Book Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-25 with Social Science categories.

Lifestyle in Siberia and the Russian North breaks new ground by exploring the concept of lifestyle from a distinctly anthropological perspective. Showcasing the collective work of ten experienced scholars in the field, the book goes beyond concepts of tradition that have often been the focus of previous research, to explain how political, economic and technological changes in Russia have created a wide range of new possibilities and constraints in the pursuit of different ways of life. Each contribution is drawn from meticulous first-hand field research, and the authors engage with theoretical questions such as whether and how the concept of lifestyle can be extended beyond its conventionally urban, Euro-American context and employed in a markedly different setting. Lifestyle in Siberia and the Russian North builds on the contributors’ clear commitment to diversifying the field and providing a novel and intimate insight into this vast and dynamic region. This book provides inspiring reading for students and teachers of Anthropology, Sociology and Cultural Studies and for anyone interested in Russia and its regions. By providing ethnographic case studies, it is also a useful basis for teaching anthropological methods and concepts, both at graduate and undergraduate level. Rigorous and innovative, it marks an important contribution to the study of Siberia and the Russian North.

This fictionalized history of the author’s maternal ancestors in Siberia provides the focus of this wide ranging book. From unjustly exiled Russians to Polish immigrants, the cavalcade of characters comes together in far eastern Siberia. They were part of the diverse group of people who settled there before 1885, known as Old Settlers or Siberiaks. Part Two, subtitled The Immigrants, introduces Michael Gladstein, a farmer and cattleman living in a village near Warsaw, whose lifelong desire is to escape the Pale of Settlement where all Jews in Russia must reside. The story of The Exiles continues in alternate chapters. But the main thread of Part Two shows how Michael and his two youngest sons manage to lawfully break out of the Pale and head for their dreamed of ranch in Siberia.
