Ciceron a beaucoup oeuvre au developpement de theories philosophiques, rhetoriques, dialectiques qui avaient cours en grec. Ce souci pedagogique de rendre accessibles a ses concitoyens les rudiments de la culture la plus raffinee passe, entre autres choses, par la latinisation de nombre de notions grecques. Cette etude s'attache a montrer la methode ciceronienne de traduction et d'adaptation de termes grecs en latin, en exploitant toutes les correspondances bilingues qui sont explicitees par l'orateur dans ses traites. Au-dela de la simple nomenclature (qui, en elle-meme, peut rendre des services aux lecteurs interesses par les lexiques de specialite), cet essai plonge au coeur meme du processus cognitif d'adaptation d'une terminologie dans une autre langue. Les solutions latines que Ciceron donne en regard d'un terme grec, lui-meme designe sans ambages, mais aussi les variantes qu'il en propose, ses hesitations, ses recusations, ses incoherences indeniables d'un texte a l'autre sont autant de cles qui ouvrent la porte du laboratoire de la neologie latine et laissent entrevoir une pensee confrontee a deux systemes linguistiques en meme temps. On s'attache a montrer comment la forme phonique du mot grec, sa morphologie, son sens influent d'une maniere decisive sur le choix d'un correspondant latin; on s'interesse aussi aux enonces qui rassemblent, dans une ou deux propositions ramassees, le terme originel et son (ses) correspondant(s) latins: s'esquisse ainsi une sorte de grammaire du metalangage en latin. On fait egalement une place a l'etude de ce systeme d'enonciation particulier du bapteme lexical dans lequel le locuteur se presente comme un onomaturge. A ce titre, cet essai est destine a tout specialiste des langues anciennes mais aussi a tout lecteur qu'interessent les phenomenes psycho-linguistiques du bilinguisme, de la traduction et de la terminologie.

This volume consists of essays published by John Glucker between 1987 and 2014 in various books and periodicals, now assembled for the first time.
