Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte, Note: 1,7, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Thomas Hobbes schrieb 1651 unter den Eindrücken des englischen Bürgerkriegs sein bedeutendes Werk Leviathan oder Stoff, Form und Gewalt eines kirchlichen und staatlichen Gemeinwesens, welches das scholastische Weltbild der damaligen Zeit auf den Kopf stellte. Ihm folgte 38 Jahre später 1689 der ebenfalls englische Philosoph John Locke mit seinem Werk Zwei Abhandlungen über die Regierung. Beide Philosophen gehen in ihren jeweiligen Werken nach demselben Dreischritt vor. Ausgehend von einem vorstaatlichen Naturzustand schließen sich die Menschen durch einen Vertag zu einem staatlichen Gemeinwesen zusammen. Doch nicht nur diese Gemeinsamkeiten auf theoretischer Ebene verbinden die beiden Autoren. Vielmehr entstanden beide Werke vor demselben zeitgenössischen, historischen und politischen Hintergrund. Dennoch ist die Rezeption der beiden Werke höchst unterschiedlich. Während die einen Locke als eine Erwiderung auf Hobbes lesen, behaupten die anderen, dass Locke im Grunde mit den Prinzipien des Leviathan übereinstimme, nur diese Übereinstimmung hinter geschickteren Formulierungen verberge. Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint ein Vergleich der beiden Positionen durchaus lohnenswert. Interessanter gestaltet sich der Vergleich jedoch, wenn man ihn unter einem vermeintlich gegensätzlichen Begriffspaar betrachtet: Der Sicherheit und der Freiheit. In unserer heutigen Zeit bestimmen u.a. provokante Slogans wie „Freiheit stirbt mit Sicherheit“ die Debatte und suggerieren somit, dass der Preis für eine gestiegene Sicherheit eine Verringerung der Freiheit sei. Diese vermeintliche Dichotomie bestimmt die Debatte, sei es, wenn es um Videoüberwachung an öffentlichen Plätzen oder stärkere Eingriffsrechte der Polizei geht. Damit diese Debatte nicht in oberflächlichen Phrasen hängen bleibt, loht sich stets ein Blick in die Geschichte und Debatten der politischen Theorie. So sollen in dieser Arbeit Hobbes und Locke unter den Aspekten von Freiheit und Sicherheit betrachtet werden. Dabei gilt es einerseits zu klären, welche jeweilige Definition sie für den Begriff anlegen, und andererseits, wie sie damit in ihren Werken umgehen. Schließt Sicherheit wirklich Freiheit aus oder ist eine Symbiose, eine ausgleichende Balance möglich?

The development of EU enlargement has raised many thorny issues unanticipated by the framers of the EC Treaty. A significant upshot of these issues is that the concept of European identity – defined in terms of such factors as culture, history and economics – has supplanted the long-dominant theme of ‘widening and deepening,’ particularly since the Union’s expansion has become primarily eastward. The major contribution of this important book lies in its analysis of the conceptualization and perception of enlargement from various points of view, focusing on the concerns of stakeholders and the ‘identity’ conflicts and uncertainties incurred by enlargement initiatives. In the course of its presentation, it details the actual pre-accession Europeanization process and its complex history. Among the key elements discussed are the following: the conflict between ‘widening’ and ‘deepening’ and the effect on EU institutional reform; institutional requirements on candidate countries; pre-accession criteria and negotiations; administrative capacity, judicial capacity, and legal approximation in accession states; capacity of the EU to absorb new Member States; and EC law as part of European identity. Also covered are specific historical details of particular pre-accession negotiations (e.g., Greece, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and Cyprus), the still inconclusive negotiations with Turkey and the Western Balkan states, and political factors involved in the non-accession of Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Amour propre is the passion that drives human individuals to seek the esteem, approval, admiration, or love—the recognition —of their fellow beings. Neuhouser reconstructs Rousseau's understanding of what the drive for recognition is, why it is so problematic, and how its presence opens up far-reaching developmental possibilities for creatures that possess it. One of Rousseau's central theses is that amour propre in its corrupted, manifestations—pride or vanity—is the principal source of an array of evils so widespread that they can easily appear to be necessary features of the human condition: enslavement, conflict, vice, misery, and self-estrangement. Yet Rousseau also argues that solving these problems depends not on suppressing or overcoming the drive for recognition but on cultivating it so that it contributes positively to the achievement of freedom, peace, virtue, happiness, and unalienated selfhood. Indeed, Rousseau goes so far as to claim that, despite its many dangers, the need for recognition is a condition of nearly everything that makes human life valuable and that elevates it above mere animal existence: rationality, morality, freedom—subjectivity itself—would be impossible for humans if it were not for amour propre and the relations to others it impels us to establish.
