Lo studio della chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena a Catania, presentato in questo volume, si inserisce nel dibattito culturale sulla sicurezza sismica del patrimonio monumentale che data dagli anni ottanta del secolo scorso e si impone, tuttora, per la sua grandissima attualità non solo a causa della ripetuta occorrenza, negli ultimi anni, di eventi sismici spesso significativi, ma anche in virtù della recente riorganizzazione normativa che, se per un verso ha recepito alcune delle più importanti acquisizioni della ricerca scientifica, per altro verso ha confermato la natura fortemente problematica di molte questioni. L'approccio metodologico dello studio si caratterizza per la stringente correlazione che viene istituita tra la fase della conoscenza, fondata su una pluralità di contributi provenienti dalla ricerca storica, dal rilievo costruttivo, dall'analisi strutturale, e la fase del progetto che, a valle di una interpretazione critica delle informazioni acquisite, perviene alla definizione della necessità e della tipologia degli interventi di miglioramento compatibili con la fabbrica originaria. Tale approccio ricalca fedelmente - solo sistematizzando l'articolazione del percorso conoscitivo e precisandone alcuni aspetti di dettaglio - la metodologia introdotta sul finire del secolo scorso da Antonino Giuffrè le cui ricerche sul comportamento meccanico dell'opera muraria e sulla analisi strutturale delle costruzioni storiche hanno modificato profondamente il modo in cui, ancora oggi, si affronta il problema della conservazione del patrimonio monumentale murario in zona sismica. Questo volume è un omaggio che i due autori, Caterina F. Carocci e Cesare Tocci, entrambi allievi di Antonino Giuffrè, rivolgono al loro maestro.

Il volume analizza, sotto l’aspetto del rischio sismico, gli edifici storici in conglomerato cementizio armato. Il dimensionamento e la conseguente sicurezza di tali edifici si basano su regole e criteri connessi a singoli brevetti, in quanto risalenti a un’epoca in cui la tecnologia del materiale era ancora in nuce. Lo studio si è posto il fine di rinvenire, attraverso l’esame di un campione statisticamente attendibile, un modello di comportamento nei confronti della vulnerabilità sismica per poter valutare con maggiore affidabilità la probabilità del danno atteso e le conseguenti priorità d’intervento. Si è cercato di fornire uno strumento di analisi semplificato in grado di offrire, già all’atto dello studio di fattibilità, una valutazione della sicurezza strutturale che possa rappresentare un ulteriore criterio di scelta per guidare un processo di riqualificazione funzionale. Il testo propone inoltre criteri di verifica che possano cogliere i dettagli costruttivi con cui gli edifici sono stati realizzati, in funzione dei brevetti maggiormente utilizzati in Italia, dato che il loro impiego e il loro riconoscimento consente anche di limitare le indagini diagnostiche necessarie per raggiungere un livello di conoscenza adeguato.
