Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating dense networks of connectivity that were not necessarily circumscribed by local, regional, or indeed national frames. Essays from a variety of disciplines address the role of slaves and indentured workers in maritime labor arrangements, systems of bondage and transoceanic migration, the impact of European imperialism on regional and local communities, commodity flows and networks of exchange, and patterns of marine resource exploitation between the Industrial Revolution and Great Depression. By encompassing the geographical, cultural, and thematic diversity of Indian Ocean pearling, Pearls, People, and Power deepens our appreciation of the underlying historical dynamics of the many worlds of the Indian Ocean. Behind every great coach stands a great coach's wife. This is definitely true. You may not see us, but we are there. We've been there since sports were invented and high school foot-ball became a "thing," especially in Texas. Yes, Texas high school football is a legend unto itself (more on that later). But regardless of where you live or what sport your husband is involved in, we love our coaches and are proud of them. It takes a lot of hard work to become a great coach's wife. I come from a line of coaches' wives (and the men they love), but even I'm thrown for a loop now and then. Thank heavens for my grandmother, fondly referred to as MiMi. She was a coach's wife for 44 years and involved in the coaching culture for well over 50 years. Just imagine the wisdom she shared with women who became engaged or newly married to a coach-me included! We lost her in May of 2017, and I'm honored to capture her essence in each chapter. It's a multi-layered manuscript-a primer covering timeless principles and a fresh look at what a modern wife faces daily. Since the early 1800s, people have made a living fishing and harvesting mussels in the lower Ohio Valley. These river folk are conscious of an occupational and social identity separate from those who earn their living from the land. Sustained by a shared love of the river, deriving joy from the beauty of their chosen environment, and feeling great pride in their ability to subsist on its wild resources and to master the skills required to make a living from it, many still identify with the nomadic houseboat-dwelling subculture that flourished on the river from the early nineteenth century to the 1950s. Today's community of fisherfolk is small and economically marginal, but their activities sustain a complex set of traditional skills and a body of verbal folklore associated with river life.
