Interdisziplinär nähern sich die Autoren der nahezu unbekannten, gleichwohl vielfältig bedeutsamen Thematik „Siegfried Wagner“. Lange Jahre von der Wissenschaft vernachlässigt, von den Bewahrern des Werkes Richard Wagners fast schon versteckt, als Komponist nahezu verleugnet und auf die Leitung der Bayreuther Festspiele bis 1930 reduziert, fristete der Liszt-Enkel und Sohn des großen Richard posthum ein musikalisches Schattendasein. Obwohl Siegfried Wagner seinen Vater in der Anzahl seiner Opernkompositionen übertraf, musste das eigene Werk zeitlebens hinter dem Opernschaffen Richard Wagners zurückstehen. Erst in den letzten zwanzig Jahren lässt sich eine Renaissance des Humperdinck-Schülers erahnen, die gerade in den vergangenen Jahren deutlich mit der Zunahme konzertanter und szenischer Aufführungen seiner Opern zu bemerken ist. Anlässlich der konzertanten Uraufführung von Siegfried Wagners Oper „Die heilige Linde“ am 17. Oktober 2001 trafen sich zahlreiche nationale und internationale Fachleute zum „Ersten Internationalen Siegfried Wagner Symposium“, dessen Beiträge und Diskussionen mit diesem Buch der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden.

Studies on the reception of the classical tradition are an indispensable part of classical studies. Understanding the importance of ancient civilization means also studying how it was used subsequently. This kind of approach is still relatively rare in the field of Byzantine Studies. This volume, which is the result of the range of interests in (mostly) non-English-speaking research communities, takes an important step to filling this gap by investigating the place and dimensions of ’Byzantium after Byzantium’. This collection of essays uses the idea of ’reception-theory’ and expands it to show how European societies after Byzantium have responded to both the reality, and the idea of Byzantine Civilisation. The authors discuss various forms of Byzantine influence in the post-Byzantine world from architecture to literature to music to the place of Byzantium in modern political debates (e.g. in Russia). The intentional focus of the present volume is on those aspects of Byzantine reception less well-known to English-reading audiences, which accounts for the inclusion of Bulgarian, Czech, Polish and Russian perspectives. As a result this book shows that although so-called 'Byzantinism' is a pan-European phenomenon, it is made manifest in local/national versions. The volume brings together specialists from various countries, mainly Byzantinists, whose works focus not only on Byzantine Studies (that is history, literature and culture of the Byzantine Empire), but also on the influence of Byzantine culture on the world after the Fall of Constantinople.

Das Buch geht davon aus, daß sämtliche Opern Siegfried Wagners (1868-1930) vom Gedanken der Läuterung getragen sind. Dieser ist in seinem siebenten Werk – sagenhaft eingekleidet – ausgeführt als Befreiung vom Bann des Schwarzschwanenreichs. Kompositorisch bewegt sich Siegfried Wagner auf der Grenze zwischen Spätromantik und Moderne. Die vorliegende Werkanalyse ist literatur- und musikwissenschaftlich angelegt und umfaßt eine Beschreibung der von ihm spezifisch ausgeprägten Form der Oper und weiter eine Analyse von Entstehungsverlauf und Werkstruktur. Insbesondere werden Wort-Ton-Beziehungen (Intratextualität) behandelt und so die semantische Tiefenstruktur der Oper erschlossen. Stofflich und ideell leitet sich das Werk Siegfried Wagners aus persönlichen Erlebnissen und aus der Lektüre auf dem Gebiet von Dichtung, Philosophie und Geschichtlichem sowie von Sagensammlungen her. So läßt sich hier eine Linie griechisch-antiker und christlicher Mystik nachzeichnen.
