Excerpt from A History of Siena I DO not think that any apology is necessary for this book. The Republic of Siena played an important part in Italy in the Middle Ages, and in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But whilst her neighbour Florence has had many historians, there is no complete history of Siena in any language. Moreover, whilst there are many works in English on subj ects connected with the art and literature of Renaissance, there are but few in our tongue which treat in a serious and scholarly spirit of the history of the Italian States. My original intention was first to tell brie y the story of Siena, and afterwards to compose a fuller account of her troubled, struggling life. But, as time progressed, I determined to attempt to write a book which would both be useful to the historical student and also not without interest to the general reader. Excerpt from Historical Studies of Church-Building in the Middle Ages: Venice, Siena, Florence Chief among these uniting influences was Christian ity. For it not only subjected all believers, whatever their difference of race and custom, to a common rule of interior life, bringing all under one universally ac knowledged, supreme authority, but it also filled their imaginations with common hopes and fears, and sup plied their understandings with common conceptions of the universe, of the origin and order of the world, and of the destiny of man. With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean, the Etruscans, and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in Europe and Asia Minor. The Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated from the Renaissance to the present day as well as works known in the Middle Ages. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline - the history of archaeology - these finely illustrated volumes will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, the classics, history, topography, and art and architectural history.

Painting In Renaissance Sie written by Keith Christiansen and has been published by Metropolitan Museum of Art this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with Art and society categories.

Catalog of an exhibition which opened at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Dec. 20, 1988. This first comprehensive study in English devoted to Sienese painting to be published in four decades centers on the fifteenth century, a fascinating but frequently neglected period when Sienese artists confronted the innovations of Renaissance painting in Florence. Two introductory essays survey fifteenth-century Sienese painting, and individual entries examine 139 key works in exhaustive detail, presenting new insights into long-debated issues of interpretation and attribution, and often utilizing previously unpublished material. Most of the major paintings are reproduced in color and supplemented with illustrations of related comparative works.
