Essay from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: keine, University of Bayreuth, course: Written and Spoken English, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This essay will deal with discourse signals, with special focus on their function and meaning. It is important to understand that in the term "discourse signals" two other terms are included: "interaction signals" and "discourse markers", which are explained later on in the text. Discourse signals as such, as the name already says, signal the structure of the discourse. They are usually used in order to make the interlocutor see one's current relationship and attitude towards the state of the discourse. The signal therefore helps the listener expecting a certain utterance intention of the speaker. Hence the former can somehow foresee the intention of the latter. The following text will go into detail concerning function and meaning of discourse signals.

Discourse Relations, also known as coherence or rhetorical relations, characterize the semantic or pragmatic relationships between clauses or sentences in discourse. Such relations are established in order to facilitate effective communication. In addition to the inventory of relations, previous research has also investigated how discourse relations are established or signaled. Discourse markers (DMs) are considered to be the most typical signals in discourse; however, focusing merely on DMs is inadequate as they can only account for a small number of relations in discourse. Thus, researchers have been exploring textual signals beyond DMs such as the Penn Discourse Treebank 2.0 (PDTB, Prasad et al. 2008) and the Rhetorical Structure Theory Signalling Corpus (RST-SC, Das and Taboada 2018). Despite their different theoretical groundings and approaches to relation signaling, both corpora annotated the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) section of the Penn Treebank (PTB, Marcus et al. 1993), i.e. the news articles. Nevertheless, previous work has suggested that signaling information is indicative of genres (e.g. Taboada and Lavid 2003; Zeldes 2018). Therefore, this project aims to anchor signaling devices on a more diverse corpus to demonstrate the inadequacy of signaling by DMs only, the abundance of open-class signals, and more importantly, the distribution of signaling devices across genres.

Signalling Of Coherence Relations In Discourse written by Debopam Das and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

In this dissertation, we examine how coherence relations (relations between propositions, such as Concession and Purpose) are signalled in discourse, and what signals are used to indicate them. We also explore the relationship between coherence relations and their signals, and examine whether every relation is signalled. Traditionally, coherence relations are considered to be signalled only by discourse markers or DMs (but, however, therefore, etc.), and relations, based on the presence and absence of DMs, are classified as explicit and implicit relations, respectively (Renkema, 2004). The fact that relations without DMs are omnipresent in discourse (Taboada, 2009), and relations are interpreted even in the absence of DMs (Sanders & Noordman, 2000) leads us to hypothesize that the signalling of relations is achieved not only by DMs, but also by several other textual signals. We also hypothesize that every relation in a discourse is signalled, as a signal must be necessary for correct interpretation. We conduct a corpus study, using the RST Discourse Treebank (Carlson et al., 2002), which contains a collection of 385 Wall Street Journal articles annotated for rhetorical (coherence) relations. We examine each relation in the corpus (20,123 relations in total), identify relevant signals for those relations, and finally, add a new layer of annotation to them, to include signalling information. Results from our corpus study show that the majority of relations (over 90%) in a discourse are signalled (sometimes by multiple signals), and also that the majority of signalled relations (over 80%) are indicated by signals other than DMs, such as lexical, semantic, syntactic and graphical features. The results also show that the signalling varies quantitatively and qualitatively for individual relations. These findings reinforce the psychological claim that there exist signals for every interpretable relation. They also suggest that the category of explicit relations needs to be expanded, to include relations which are signalled by any textual feature. The annotated corpus with signalling information can be used in psycholinguistic studies to determine how readers or hearers use signals to identify relations. It can also be used to develop discourse parsing systems to automatically categorize coherence relations.

Studies of Discourse Markers so far have concentrated on either the descriptive or the theoretical parameter. This book brings together thirteen papers concerning aspects of lexical instantiations of Discourse Marking devices, ranging from functional descriptions along cognitive, attitudinal, interactive and structure signalling lines to theoretical issues arising from various properties discourse markers display cross-linguistically. Data from English, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, and Japanese are examined. Also addressed are questions concerning overall accounts, potential sub-classifications, possible form-function correlations and the appropriateness of such frameworks as Relevance Theory for their description. Interestingly, features evident in the distribution and use of lexical discourse markers are shown to affect the assessment of such theoretical constructs as the distinction between conceptual and procedural meaning. A more sophisticated picture emerges than a simple dichotomy between the two. Studies of the grammar of Discourse Markers hence would have to take the observations and suggestions raised in this collection of papers into account.
