Nell'utopia dei geek, i fanatici della tecnologia digitale, in un futuro molto prossimo poderosi sistemi informatici di raccolta dati e misurazioni statistiche consentiranno di monitorare ogni aspetto della nostra vita, fornendo risposte risolutive a tutte le più scottanti questioni del nostro tempo, dalla povertà all'inquinamento, dalla corruzione alla criminalità, dall'obesità allo smaltimento dei rifiuti. Questo «grande esperimento migliorativo» è visto come un processo ineluttabile e definitivo, e segnerà una svolta epocale nella storia dell'umanità. L'obiezione mossa da Evgeny Morozov a questa straordinaria quanto ingenua prospettiva di perfezionamento telematico del pianeta parte dalla critica ai due cardini ideologici che la sostengono. Da un lato il «soluzionismo», ovvero l'idea che per qualsiasi problema esiste un rimedio digitale; dall'altro l'«internet-centrismo», ovvero la teoria per cui tutti gli ambiti dell'esistenza, per diventare migliori, devono modellarsi sulle caratteristiche della Rete, evitando in ogni modo di intralciarne o limitarne l'ecosistema. Consapevole di fronteggiare un nemico agguerrito e subdolo, Morozov si propone di smascherare l'idolatria di «Internet», che propone il miraggio di una vita individuale e sociale, fisica e psicologica, senza intralci. L'illusione che tutto possa essere corretto e sanato può infatti avere effetti disastrosi sulla capacità dell'uomo di convivere con la complessità. Lo «scettico della rete» Morozov, pur non rifiutando totalmente il mondo digitale, sottolinea la drammatica necessità di approfondire il dibattito sulle tecnologie e di problematizzarne la discussione affinché si recuperino i valori propri di un'umanità difettosa e non «aggiustabile» digitalmente: perché, ci ricorda, «l'imperfezione, l'opacità, il disordine e l'opportunità di fare la cosa sbagliata sono elementi costitutivi della libertà umana, e qualunque sforzo miri a sradicarli finirà per sradicare anche quella libertà».
