In Visual Cultures of Death in Central Europe, Aleksandra Koutny-Jones explores the emergence of a remarkable cultural preoccupation with death in Poland-Lithuania (1569-1795). Examining why such interests resonated so strongly in the Baroque art of this Commonwealth, she argues that the printing revolution, the impact of the Counter-Reformation, and multiple afflictions suffered by Poland-Lithuania all contributed to a deep cultural concern with mortality. Introducing readers to a range of art, architecture and material culture, this study considers various visual evocations of death including 'Dance of Death' imagery, funerary decorations, coffin portraiture, tomb chapels and religious landscapes. These, Koutny-Jones argues, engaged with wider European cultures of contemplation and commemoration, while also being critically adapted to the specific context of Poland-Lithuania.

Der vorliegende Band hat zum Ziel, die religiös-kulturellen Dimensionen des Transfers zwischen der katholischen Kirche in Polen und in Deutschland einer kritischen Prüfung zu unterziehen und dabei über die tradierten Grenzen des deutsch-polnischen Dialogs hinauszugehen. In der Geschichte des Zusammenlebens von polnischen und deutschen Katholiken bestätigt sich die These, dass die in ihren Anschauungen und Traditionen verschiedenen Völker eben nicht nur nebeneinander, sondern auch miteinander gelebt haben. Während sich frühere Untersuchungen vor allem auf das konzentrierten, was die deutschen und polnischen Katholiken trennte, beschäftigen sich neuere wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen - auch die Beiträge in diesem Band - eher mit Interaktion und Kooperation. Der vorliegende Band ist in fünf unterschiedliche Kulturtransferprozesse widerspiegelnde Schwerpunkte gegliedert, wobei verschiedene Transfervariationen hier vielfältig überlappen und ineinanderfließen. Analysiert werden die sich auf den Kontrast zwischen Selbst- und Fremdbild beziehenden und konfessionell "gefärbten" Identifikationsmöglichkeiten, die Wirkung von Personen in der Rolle der Kulturvermittler, kulturelle Verflechtungen und Blockierungen kultureller Elemente bei verschiedenen Gruppen (von Jugendlichen oder Frauen über Vertriebenenverbände bis zu Theologen), transnationale Beispiele der Kooperation im kirchlichen Bereich sowie Beispiele der kulturellen Transferprozesse auf dem Gebiet der Literatur und des Zeitungswesens.

Das Großfürstentum Litauen ist in der westlichen Forschung bisher kaum beachtet worden. Dabei bildete es einen eigenen, mit Polen verbundenen Reichsverband, der durch mehrsprachige, multikonfessionelle und multikulturelle Milieus gekennzeichnet war. Als Folge sprachlicher, nationaler und konfessioneller Angleichungsprozesse erfuhren jene Verhältnisse zwischen 1500 und 1795 einen tiefgreifenden Wandel. Litauen bietet damit ein faszinierendes Beispiel für die vergleichende Analyse von frühmodernen Imperien. Mathias Niendorf verarbeitet souverän die nur schwer zugänglichen Arbeiten in u. a. litauischer, weißrussischer, polnischer und russischer Sprache. Berücksichtigt werden auch religiös-ethnische Minderheiten wie Juden, Tataren und Karaimen. Schwerpunkte liegen auf den protonationalen Diskursen, der trennenden und integrierenden Rolle von Sprache und nicht zuletzt auf der Bedeutung des Religiösen im Spannungsfeld von orthodoxer, katholischer, unierter und protestantischer Konfession. Ein besonderes Interesse gilt dabei Marien- und Heiligenkulten; in territorialer Hinsicht liegt ein Fokus auf Zemaiten (Niederlitauen). Die erste Auflage fand im In- und Ausland ein breites, positives Echo in Fachwelt und Medien und ist 2007 mit dem Preis des renommierten Warschauer 'Przegla d Wschodni' (Ost-Umschau) ausgezeichnet worden. Eine polnische und litauische Übersetzung befinden sich in Vorbereitung. 'Mathias Niendorf haben wir eine wertvolle und in hohem Grad aufschlussreiche Arbeit zu verdanken, die zu weiteren Diskussionen, Analysen und Ergebnissen führen dürfte. [...] Man kann den Autor somit nur beglückwünschen, auf unbekannte Seiten der Geschichte des Großfürstentums Litauen ein Licht geworfen zu haben.'
