No es aventurado afirmar que la mayoría de los chilenos ha escuchado al menos una vez, y es posible que muchas veces, la voz de Silvia Infantas. Como tampoco es arriesgado aseverar que esa misma mayoría la ha oído cantar sin saber a quién pertenece esa voz. Es casi una garantía: Silvia Infantas será escuchada con certeza, y a gran escala, al menos una vez al año en nuestro país. Su canto, cuando lleguen las fiestas dieciocheras, se oirá en fondas y ramadas, en programas de radio y matinales de televisión, pero además en el sonido ambiente de restaurantes y malls, en ascensores y pasillos de supermercado, en salas de espera y música de centrales telefónicas, en ceremonias municipales y actos escolares, en fiestas criollas y semanas de la chilenidad. En septiembre, la “música de fondo” dicta un repertorio de tonadas, cuecas y canciones tradicionales. Y pocos como Silvia Infantas aportaron tanto a ese cancionero nacional. Esta es la mujer que, con su primer conjunto, Los Baqueanos, cantó “Tonadas de Manuel Rodríguez” y cuecas como “La rosa y el clavel”, “Los lagos de Chile”, “La chiquilla que baila” y “El marinero”. Y con su segundo grupo, Los Cóndores, canciones inmortales, como “La consentida”, “Adiós, Santiago querido”, “Si vas para Chile”, “Mi banderita chilena”, “Cantarito de greda”, “Camino de luna”, “Bajando pa’ Puerto Aysén” o “La parva de paja”. Silvia Infantas no solo cantó todo eso con gran éxito en su día. Lo sigue cantando hoy. Retirada como está desde que hace casi medio siglo abandonó todo escenario, es sin embargo su voz la que está fijada en la memoria discográfica chilena: prensada en esos discos originales de acetato o vinilo, multiplicada en el nuevo siglo por efecto de dispositivos y plataformas digitales. La suya es la historia de una diva de la canción chilena de su tiempo. Es la última estrella de la constelación de cantantes en la que antes de ella brillaron nombres como Ester Soré, Carmencita Ruiz, Margarita Alarcón, Las Morenitas y tantas otras. Y en último término ese doble rasgo –celebridad y anonimato– es también la mejor definición para su trayectoria: entre el misterio de su temprano retiro y el esplendor con que se inscribió para siempre en la historia de la música popular chilena.

To date, scholars have paid little attention to the role that music played at political rallies and protests, the political activism of right-wing and left-wing musicians, and the emergence of musical performances as sites of verbal and physical confrontations between Allende supporters and the opposition. This book illuminates a largely unexplored facet of the Cold War era in Latin America by examining linkages among music, politics, and the development of extreme political violence. It traces the development of folk-based popular music against the backdrop of Chile's social and political history, explaining how music played a fundamental role in a national conflict that grew out of deep cultural divisions. Through a combination of textual and musical analysis, archival research, and oral histories, Jedrek Mularski demonstrates that Chilean rightists came to embrace a national identity rooted in Chile's central valley and its huaso ("cowboy") traditions, which groups of well-groomed, singing huasos expressed and propagated through música típica. In contrast, leftists came to embrace an identity that drew on musical traditions from Chile's outlying regions and other Latin American countries, which they expressed and propagated through nueva canción. Conflicts over these notions of Chilenidad ("Chileanness") both reflected and contributed to the political polarization of Chilean society, sparking violent confrontations at musical performances and political events during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mularski offers a powerful example and multifaceted understanding of the fundamental role that music often plays in shaping the contours of political struggles and conflicts throughout the world.This is an important book for Latin American studies, history, musicology/ethnomusicology, and communication.
