The margravial court astronomer Simon Marius, was involved in all of the new observations made with the recently invented telescope in the early part of the seventeenth century. He also discovered the Moons of Jupiter in January 1610, but lost the priority dispute with Galileo Galilei, because he missed to publish his findings in a timely manner. The history of astronomy neglected Marius for a long time, finding only the apologists for the Copernican system worthy of attention. In contrast the papers presented on the occasion of the Simon Marius Anniversary Conference 2014, and collected in this volume, demonstrate that it is just this struggle to find the correct astronomical system that makes him particularly interesting. His research into comets, sunspots, the Moons of Jupiter and the phases of Venus led him to abandon the Ptolemaic system and adopt the Tychonic one. He could not take the final step to heliocentricity but his rejection was based on empirical arguments of his time. This volume presents a translation of the main work of Marius and shows the current state of historical research on Marius.

Im Zentrum dieses Buches steht der frankische Galilei, Simon Marius; er gehort zu den Astronomen, die vor 400 Jahren die astronomische Forschung durch die Einfuhrung des Teleskops revolutioniert haben. Ihm zu Ehren wurde im Rahmen des Internationalen Jahrs der Astronomie 2009 eine Lehrer-Fortbildungstagung im Simon-Marius-Gymnasium in Gunzenhausen organisiert. Das davon inspirierte Buch bietet in zwolf Kapiteln einen Uberblick von den Anfangen der Astronomie, besonders in Franken, uber die Entwicklung des astronomischen Weltbildes von der Fruhen Neuzeit bis zur modernen Kosmologie. Franken und speziell Nurnberg als Centrum Europae kann auf eine grosse Tradition in der Astronomie zuruckblicken, beginnend mit Johannes Regiomontan (1436-1476) am Ende des Mittelalters, fortgesetzt von seinem Schuler Bernhard Walther (1430-1504), der das (spatere) Durerhaus als Beobachtungsplatz wahlte. In der Fruhen Neuzeit entwickelte sich Nurnberg zum Zentrum des Humanismus und der Reformation, eine Zeit, die offen fur Wissenschaft und Kultur war. Das Werk des Copernicus, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, das den Durchbruch zum neuen Weltbild symbolisiert, wurde 1543 in Nurnberg gedruckt. Auch der Bau wissenschaftlicher, besonders astronomischer Instrumente und Globen erlebte hier einen Hohepunkt. Das nachste Highlight war die Barockzeit, als Georg Christoph Eimmart 1678 seine Sternwarte auf der Vestnertorbastei errichtete. Auch in dieser Zeit bluhten wissenschaftliche Aktivitaten, die Grundung der Universitat Altdorf, der Instrumentenbau, der Buchdruck und die Kartographie. Nicht zu vergessen Peter Kolb, Eimmarts Assistent, der eine erste Sternwarte am Kap in Sudafrika errichtete und 1718 Rektor der Lateinschule in Neustadt an der Aisch wurde. Nurnberg entwickelte sich (neben Augsburg) in der Fruhen Neuzeit zu einem Zentrum der Herstellung wissenschaftlicher Instrumente in Deutschland. Simon Marius war ohne Zweifel ein bedeutender Wissenschaftler seiner Zeit. Um so unverständlicher ist es, dass sein Hauptwerk Mundus lovialis nie ins Deutsche übersetzt worden ist. Deshalb wurde es von mir sehr begrüßt, dass im Schuljahr 1986/87 Schüler des Leistungskurses Latein diese Übersetzung im Rahmen ihrer Facharbeit besorgten. Sie wurden dabei beraten von ihrem Kursleiter Oberstudienrat Joachim Schlör und von Oberstudienrat Alois Wilder, der ihnen astronomische Hilfestellungen gab. Ihnen allen und auch dem Verleger Dr. Johann Schrenk, der die Herausgabe der Übersetzung ermöglichte, ist herzlich zu danken. Damit wurde der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit eines großen Sohnes der Stadt Gunzenhausen, des Namenspatrons unseres Gymnasiums, endlich die ihr gebührende Aufmerksamkeit und Würdigung zuteil. There are no clear demarcation lines between magic, astrology, necromancy, medicine, and even sciences in the pre-modern world. Under the umbrella term 'magic,' the contributors to this volume examine a wide range of texts, both literary and religious, both medical and philosophical, in which the topic is discussed from many different perspectives. The fundamental concerns address issue such as how people perceived magic, whether they accepted it and utilized it for their own purposes, and what impact magic might have had on the mental structures of that time. While some papers examine the specific appearance of magicians in literary texts, others analyze the practical application of magic in medical contexts. In addition, this volume includes studies that deal with the rise of the witch craze in the late fifteenth century and then also investigate whether the Weberian notion of disenchantment pertaining to the modern world can be maintained. Magic is, oddly but significantly, still around us and exerts its influence. Focusing on magic in the medieval world thus helps us to shed light on human culture at large.

Wichtige Entwicklungen, wie Experimente, mechanistische Weltbilder, die Erfindung von Instrumenten und Prioritätenstreit werden thematisch zusammengefasst. Aber auch deren Weltbilder bestehen bis heute in ihrer ursprünglichen Form nicht mehr weiter, wenn Gewissheiten durch Wahrscheinlichkeiten ersetzt werden, und Raum und Zeit ihre Absolutheit verlieren.
