A program was conducted in which the response and failure characteristics of solid propellant rocket motors when subjected to transient thermal conditions representing air launch operational environments were recorded and analyzed. Future Air Force mission profiles were used. The Maverick motor, AGM-65A, was used as a test bed on the program.

This report primarily covers the tests and analyses performed on the Standard ARM (AGM-78) missile to establish a condensation test simulating the captive-carry cycle environment, i.e., sea level storage, ascent to altitude, cruise at altitude and descent to sea level. A historical account of moisture problems encountered with several other Navy air launched missiles is also presented. A test cycle and special test equipment was designed and tests conducted to substantiate an analytically derived condensation cycle. The test cycle and procedures are expected to be submitted for incorporation into MIL-STD-810 (Method 518), Environmental Test Methods. (Author).

Pursuant to the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), Executive Order 12114, Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) Regulations 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Parts 1500-1508, and 32 CFR Part 989, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has conducted an assessment of the potential environmental consequences of the Long Range Air Launch Target (LRALT) System Development and Demonstration Tests. The purpose of the Proposed Action is to develop and demonstrate (through a flight test) an air launch target missile system that provides a realistic threat simulation for testing long-range ballistic missile defense systems. The LRALT System is needed to provide enhanced flexibility and capability to the Department of Defense (DOD) ballistic missile defense test programs and ranges. The LRALT System Program would extend the air launch target capability provided by the current Short Range Air Launch Target (SRALT) from approximately 373 miles (600 kilometers) up to about 1,553 miles (2,500 kilometers) while providing widely varied launch azimuths, limited set-up time, and minimal use of launch facility infrastructure.

Report presents results of a program conducted to evaluate the effects of air-launch missile environments on the aging characteristics of advanced HTPB propellants and representative motor designs incorporating these propellants. The study addressed aging of two 12-inch-diameter, SRBDM-type motors cast with moderate-burning-rate propellant. The propellant was characterized, service-life loads were evaluated, and the motors were analyzed and subjected to a accelerated storage and simulated captive-flight environmental testing. Carton propellant from the same batch from which the motors were cast was aged in the laboratory. Subsequently, aging characteristics of the propellant were determined from motor response and the motor design and test methods were evaluated. The motors, instrumentation, and tests are described; and test results are presented. Test results indicate: Characteristics of the propellant tested change very slowly over a period from 6 months to 5 years after cast; the grain configuration tested is structurally adequate to withstand at least 5 years of use in the tactical air-launch environment; current analytical techniques are adequate; and the ALIVE approach to accelerated service-life simulation is feasible and can be made reasonably accurate. Missile Flight Simulation written by Jeffrey Strickland and has been published by Lulu.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08 with Guided missiles categories.

Surface-to-air missiles are designed to defend a land area against an aerial or theater ballistic missile threat. The size of the defended area and the capabilities of the threat have great influence on the speed, maneuverability, and lethality requirements of the missile system. Simulation of the missile flight path can provide valuable information about these requirements. A missile flight simulation is a computational tool that calculates the flight of a missile from launch until it engages the target. The simulation is based on mathematical models of the missile, target and environment. This book provides instruction for the preparation of these mathematical models to simulate the flight of a surface-to-air missile. This book may be used as a reference or as a textbook, although it is devoid of exercises. However, the reader is encourages to perform the simulation of Charter 12 using MATLAB and Simulink, or a programming language such as FORTRAN (see Chapter 10).

Simulation Of The Flight Of A Short Range Air Defense System Rocket Before Radar Acquisition written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1977 with categories.

This report deals with the problem of digitally simulating the motion of a Short Range Air Defense System (SHORADS) rocket during launch and until the rocket has been acquired by a launcher-fixed tracking radar. Physical and mathematical models of the launcher, the rocket per se and its environment, the rocket's control system and the pre-radar-acquisition guidance system are presented. The pre-acquisition guidance sensor is a dual field of view infrared angle sensor. The rocket is of the folding-wing, tube-launched, boost-sustain type and rolls at an essentially constant rate. Control torques are generated by deflecting the thrust of the solid-propellant, sustainer rocket motor and are available about a single rocket-fixed axis. The models for the launcher and rocket include the anomalistic effects of tipoff, launcher slew rate, rocket dynamic unbalance and thrust misalignment, aerodynamic forces and moments, jet damping, variable mass, and moments of inertia of the rocket and winds. Two computer codes - one for the launch phase and one for the post-launch, controlled phase - are also described and typical simulation results are presented and discussed. The rocket simulated performs well when various combinations of anomalies are present, but large slew rates of the launcher result in failure of the rocket to enter the field of view of the infrared sensor, if it is launched from a 'lagging' tube.
