Business, academia, industry, and the military require well trained personnel to function in highly complex working environments. To reduce high training costs and to improve the effectiveness of training, training system developers often use sophisticated training media such as, simulators, videodisks, and computer-based instruction. The designers of these training media are continually striving to provide maximum training effectiveness at minimum cost. Although literature is available on the implementation and use of specific training media, there is little guidance on a major feature that is central to these media. All of these media present the learner with an interactive simulation of the real world. Effective training system design can be facilitated if the requirements of the real-world task are properly included in training. A conceptual bridge is necessary to link these actual task requirements to the characteristics of the training system. This book provides such a conceptual bridge. The need for improved training is critical in the area of equipment operation, maintenance, and decision making tasks. For example, the importance of improved operator training in the nuclear power industry has become paramount since the Three Mile Island accident and the more serious accident at the Chernobyl reactor in the U. S. S. R. Technology, such as the availability and power of computers, offers a wider variety of training options, but requires additional training system design decisions.

This report reviews the literature on simulator fidelity and shows that there is a great deal of confusion in the usage of the term fidelity. A two-aspect definition of fidelity is proposed which focuses on the physical and functional similarity of the training device to the actual equipment for which training is undertaken. This definition is discussed as it applies to several parameters of the training situation, such as type of task, trainee's stage of learning, or total training context, to determine training effectiveness. Methodological issues in the empirical determination of fidelity requirements are discussed. A pilot research strategy to begin the empirical study of fidelity requirements is outlined. (Author).

This paper provides a preliminary organizational framework for a training simulator fidelity data base. Such a data base can provide a starting point for the development of a formal training simulator fidelity decision- making package and can also be the basis for the determination of future research. The organizational structure of the data base is developed in three stages. First, the issue of determining the minimum required fidelity for a training simulator is located in its place within the context of the ISD process. Second, the necessary informational inputs to the fidelity decision process from task analyses are discussed with the goal of obtaining more useful information for making fidelity decisions. Finally, a proposed structure for making fidelity decisions and for conducting future research is presented. This structure is derived from the use of a proposed iterative data base of empirically derived data on the relationship between simulator fidelity and training effectiveness.

Advances in computer, visual display, motion and force cueing and other technologies in the past two decades have had a dramatic effect on the design and use of simulation technology in aviation and other fields. The effective use of technology in training, safety investigation, engineering and scientific research requires an understanding of its capabilities and limitations. As the technology has as its primary goal the creation of virtual environments for human users, knowledge of human sensory, perceptual, and cognitive functioning is also needed. This book provides a review and analysis of the relevant engineering and science supporting the design and use of advanced flight simulation technologies. It includes chapters reviewing key simulation areas such as visual scene, motion, and sound simulation and a chapter analyzing the role of recreating the pilot's task environment in the overall effectiveness of simulators. The design and use of flight simulation are addressed in chapters on the effectiveness of flight simulators in training and on the role of physical and psychological fidelity in simulator design. The problems inherent in the ground-based simulation of flight are also reviewed as are promising developments in flight simulation technology and the important role flight simulators play in advanced aviation research. The readership includes: flight simulation engineers and designers, human factors researchers and practitioners, aviation safety investigators, flight training management and instructors, training and instructional technologists, virtual environment design community, and regulatory authorities.

As part of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) initiative towards affordable flight simulators for U.S. commuter airlines, this study empirically examined the effect of six-degree-of-freedom simulator platform motion on recurrent pilot training and evaluation in the presence of a wide field-of-view visual system. Sound scientific data on the relationship between the motion requirement and its effect on the transfer of pilot performance/behavior to and from the airplane is all the more important given that the FAA may mandate the use of simulators for airline pilot training and evaluation. The study addressed the question of whether the motion provided by an FAA qualified Level C simulator affects 1) pilot performance/behavior and instructor grading criteria during First Look evaluation,2) the courseof Trainingin the simulator, and 3) the Transfer of skills acquired during Training in the simulator with or without motion to the simulator with motion as a stand-in for the airplane. Every effort was made to avoid deficiencies in the research design identified in a review of prior studies, by measuring pilot stimulation andresponse, testing both maneuvers and pilots that are diagnosticof a need of motion, avoiding pilot and instructor bias, and ensuring sufficient statistical powerto capture operationally relevant effects.
