In his first letter Peter declares that Jesus bore our sins in his body so that we may cease from sin and live for righteousness. He followed that by saying that some people had ceased from sin. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. (1 Peter 2:24) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for corrupt human desires but for the will of God. (1 Peter 4:1-2) Peter says that there were people who had ceased from sin. Moreover, he tells how they became people who had ceased from sin: they suffered in the flesh. He also gives us a glimpse into how such people lived: no longer controlled by corrupt desires, but by God's will. The real possibility of ceasing from sin should be of great interest to those who love Jesus (John 14:15, 21, 23, 24) seek to be controlled by God's will (1 Peter 4:1-2) seek to live for righteousness (1 Peter 2:24) seek to be free from sin seek the spiritual growth and fruitfulness that comes with being free from sin seek eternal life (Matthew 5:29-30, 18:8-9, Mark 9:44-47) seek fellowship and union with God (John 14:15, 21, 23) Satan is interested in keeping people from ceasing from sin. He is seeking to rob Jesus and us of the results of his sacrifice through one of the greatest deceptions in history: causing people to believe that it is impossible to cease from sin.

God has set us free from sin in spite of ourselves! After experiencing what can only be described as a powerful born-again transformation, Dan Lemburg soon discovered that much of his old self was still there, just waiting for an opportunity to break out. And what Christian doesn't experience failure yet yearns to be free from the power of sin? Dan has good news for all of us: We are free from the power of sin if only we realize what God has already done for us! Free From the Power of Sin addresses the human struggles all of us as believers must deal with to one degree or another the things we are prone to sweep under the rug. Dan proposes a different solution to the problem of sin than what is commonly taught. Instead of the various spiritual disciplines used to curtail sin, he focuses on helping us understand why we continue to sin, what God does to address the problem of sin, and how we can confidently walk in His solution.

Every man on earth experiences the struggle with sin that which I will, I do not; that which I do I hate. Many have been completely overcome and have given up striving with sin. These know they are sinners and are not struggling not to be. Others have short victories, usually interspersed with long defeats. Many Christians, when they gave their lives to Christ, never anticipated what turned out to be long battles with sin. Some are disappointed in themselves because of their inability to overcome sin. These battles partly come from an improper understanding of the nature of the enemy. Sin can be overcome, but it requires knowledge and cooperation with God. This book attempts to show that sin is not just about what we do, but who we are. Using the Word of God, it demonstrates that sin can be overcome, not by recourse to human strength, but by taking on the nature of Jesus, who is Gods provision for an overcoming life.
