I used to sit on my mother's lap while she showed me the faded pictures in her old photo album. "That's me when I had beautiful long blond hair," she's say, or ""Look at that Homer! He was a bad one." Then, a far-away look would cross her face, and she would smile. "My Lord. See that dress? I thought I looked so spiffy, back then." Tears would shine in her eyes when she turned to pictures of my aunt Ruth, who died many years ago. Then Mother would close the album and say, "Another time, honey. I must see to dinner before your father comes home." Through pictures and eventually by writing SINCERELY, LOUISE, I have come to know my mother in a new and wonderful way. Parts of her story are from her own words, parts from the early pictures, the rest, from my imagination. You may call the book a memoir, a fictional biography, or a tall tale. I simply call it, Sincerely, Louise.

By the end of the book, you will have learned all the knitting stitches to follow patterns and make your own creations. Knitter extraordinaire Louise Walker’s mantra is ‘If you can knit, purl, increase and decrease, then you can make anything.’ In this book, she teaches you all the basic techniques you need to know to make the most exciting and achievable knits. Assuming that you’ve never held a needle before, the book introduces you the basics and teaches you new techniques as and when you need them, without overloading you with information. Unlike other knitting books, First Time Knits has links to accessible online video tutorials. As you go through the book, there are also Louise's knitters who work on the same project as you. They tell you their knitting stories and compare their finished knits with you, helping you identify the common mistakes made, why they’ve made them and how to fix them. This knitting book is perfect for crafters who want to make something beautiful quickly, but are intimidated by most knitting patterns. Projects include: Animal phone cosy, bear cup warmer, tiger scarf, whale bottle carrier, turtle coaster, faux taxidermy, bobble hat, hot dog toy, rainbow raglan jumper.

'Wonderful, thoughtful, practical' - Cariad Lloyd, Griefcast 'Encouraging and inspiring' - Dr Kathryn Mannix, author of Amazon bestseller With the End in Mind End-of-life doula Anna Lyons and funeral director Louise Winter have joined forces to share a collection of the heartbreaking, surprising and uplifting stories of the ordinary and extraordinary lives they encounter every single day. From working with the living, the dying, the dead and the grieving, Anna and Louise reveal the lessons they've learned about life, death, love and loss. Together they've created a profound but practical guide to rethinking the one thing that's guaranteed to happen to us all. We are all going to die, and that's ok. Let's talk about it. Native American students entering college often experience a dramatic confrontation of cultures. As one of the writers in this remarkable collective memoir remarks, "When I was a child, I was taught certain things: don't stand up to your elders; don't question authority; life is precious; the earth is precious; take it slowly; enjoy it. And then you go to college and you learn all these other things that never fit." Making things fit, finding that elusive balance between tribal values and the demands of campus life is a recurring theme in this landmark collection of personal essays. Navajo or Choctaw, Tlingit or Sioux, each of the essayists (all graduates of Dartmouth College) gives a heartfelt account of struggle and adjustment. The result is a compelling portrait of the anguish Native American students feel justifying the existence of their own cultures not only to other students but also throughout the predominantly white institutions they have joined. Among the contributors are a tribal court judge and a professional baseball player, the first Navajo woman surgeon, and the former executive director of a Native American preparatory school. Their memories and insights are unparalleled.
