(c) 2000 www.pagliarino.com/sindone. The Author has the modest purpose to introduce and examine the Shroud and he does not want to induce the reader to believe to think that the Sheet has wrapped Christ's body or, as commonly said, that it's authentic; however, Pagliarino supposes that the affirmative reasons are prevailing: many are the data in favor and only two facts are against and just one of them is objectively considerable: the tests of the carbon 14; however, many experts say that these tests were not convincing; the other adverse reason is the anticlerical prejudice: it's very strong and leads to consider with nuisance the Shroud without investigating enough the matter.

*Includes pictures. *Explains the history of the Shroud. *Includes the arguments made for and against the Shroud's authenticity. *Includes a bibliography for further reading. For centuries, professional historians have labored through the painstaking task of documenting history as accurately as possible, but even with modern technology, archaeology, and records, some questions have eluded attempts to answer them. From the origins of Atlantis to the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the mysteries behind some of history's most famous people and events have fascinated countless generations. In Charles River Editors' History's Greatest Mysteries series, readers can discover the known, the unknown, and the possible answers to history's most enduring questions in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Critics call it one of the greatest pieces of fraud in religious history. Believers call it one of the most important artifacts in Christianity. Everyone agrees that it's mysterious, interesting and controversial. The Shroud of Turin has been a controversial relic from the time it was first publicly displayed in northern France in the 14th century until the much-awaited Carbon 14 tests were performed on the cloth in 1988. One group consisting of religious believers and agnostic scientists has argued vehemently that this Shroud represents the actual burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, while another group of religious believers and critical scientists and scholars has argued that the Shroud of Turin is a medieval forgery created by an artist for Geoffrey de Charny or one of his ancestors in 14th century France. Indeed, the position one takes on the Shroud seems to cut across the usual divisions of creedal affirmation or general education level; some church leaders have decried it as a forgery, while a few have marveled at its authentic character. In some cases, the data that each side presents is different. For example, different experts have analyzed the cloth with the same scientific question and come up with a different result. In most cases, however, the data itself is identical, with the only difference being the interpretation given to the data. Writer John Walsh may have put it best when he stated, "The Shroud of Turin is either the most awesome and instructive relic of Jesus Christ in existence...or it is one of the most ingenious, most unbelievably clever products of the human mind and hand on record. It is one or the other; there is no middle ground." (Walsh, 1963, 8) As Walsh's comment notes, perhaps the most amazing thing about the Shroud is that while the radioactive carbon dating on the cloth suggests it dates back to medieval times, there's no consensus on just how the image got onto the cloth. Even back in the late 14th century, religious authorities considered it a fraud, yet modern science hasn't been able to explain how the artist responsible for the image rendered it. To this day, the Catholic Church has taken no definitive stance on its authenticity, with Pope Francis stopping short of that by stating "the Man of the Shroud invites us to contemplate Jesus of Nazareth." Given the arguments regarding the Shroud of Turin, and the questions that remain unanswered, it's only fair for a work on the Shroud to present the varied and contradictory evidence within the narrative of each respective side. History's Greatest Mysteries: The Shroud of Turin provides a brief physical description of the Shroud and then looks at the arguments that assert the Shroud is authentic, as well as the arguments that it is a brilliant medieval forgery.

Shrouds have long held a special place among the sacred relics of Christendom. In the Middle Ages, shrouds, like holy relics, were the prize possessions of churches and cities. Cloaked in mystery, these artifacts have long been objects of reverence and awe, as well as sources of debates, quarrels, thefts, and excommunications. Shrouds--so some claim--provide visible testimony to faith. One in particular has drawn the interest of scholars, clergy, and the public alike: the Shroud of Turin. In The Shroud of Turin, Andrea Nicolotti chronicles the history of this famous cloth, including its circuitous journey from the French village of Lirey to its home in the Italian city of Turin, as well as the fantastical claims surrounding its origin and modern scientific efforts to prove or disprove its authenticity. Full of intrigue and mystery, The Shroud of Turin dismantles hypotheses that cannot survive the rigors of historical analysis. Nicolotti directly addresses the thorny problem of the authenticity of the relic and the difficult relationship between history, faith, and science.

"Enrico Baccarini is an Italian journalist who has unveiled the missing years of the Turin Shroud. The Shroud mysteriously appeared in 1353 in Lirey, in the hands of Geoffrey de Charney. But Baccarini has traced the Shroud back to Florence, to Walter VI, who briefly reigned over the city, before sent to France, where he connected with his relatives, de Charney family. Baccarini shows that there is far more mystery to Florence than commonly accepted, and that this dates back much earlier than commonly assumed, including the likes of Dante Alighieri". Jesus Christ is truly risen, and with his Shroud, He has left us an emblem that provides us with messages for our day and time. The Shroud of Turin reveals to our astonished eyes the Jesus-Father who loves us above all things. This book is intended to guide readers to a better understanding the nature of the Christian God. It provides answers to questions about the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin. From the moment this sacred relic was first created, it has had the innate power to guide and, when needed, to ease our human life journey to God. The details described in the book are drawn from the words of the German-language mystics who received the texts for the New Revelation. Prior to modern research on the Shroud, these details had never been confirmed. Traces of blood from the crucified Jesus form symbols on the Shroud, allowing us to comprehend Jesus Resurrection not only in allegorical terms, but also tangibly, materially. The Shroud of Christ is a visual and symbolic Gospel, which requires no words in order to be intuitively understood. To provide a clearer understanding of the Shroud messages, some thoughts and philosophies prominent figures from the worlds of science and the arts have also been included in this book. The overlap between the worldviews of these individuals and the texts from the German mystics makes clear that even for such noted individuals as Goethe, Planck, Einstein, and Heisenberg, nothing that exists on earth, in the microcosm, or in the universe would be conceivable in the absence of a Creator Spirit. Life itself is dim and only the power to create symbols and to understand them turns us from living beings into human beings. (Werner Heisenberg)
