"This study examines the historical development, social, political and economic significance of gospel music in Zimbabwe. It approaches music with Christian theological ideas and popular appeal as a cultural phenomenon with manifold implications. Applying a history of religious approach to the study of a widespread religious phenomenon, the study seeks to link religious studies with popular culture. It argues that gospel music represents a valuable entry point into a discussion of contemporary African cultural production. Gospel music successfully blends the musical traditions of Zimbabwe, influences from other African countries, and music styles from other parts of the world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Ojibwe Singers written by Michael David McNally and has been published by Minnesota Historical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

In the early nineteenth century, Protestant missionaries promoted the translation of evangelical hymns into the Ojibwe language, regarding this music not only as a shared form of worship but also as a tool for rooting out native cultural identity. But for many Minnesota Ojibwe today, the hymns emerged from this history of material and cultural dispossession to become emblematic of their identity as a distinct native people. Author Michael McNally uses hymn singing as a lens to view culture in motion--to consider the broader cultural processes through which Native American peoples have creatively drawn on the resources of ritual to make room for survival, integrity, and a cultural identity within the confines of colonialism.

Excerpt from Expression in Singing: Including Thirty-One Exercises for Voice Culture I, theodore drury, feel that no higher compliment could be paid me than Mr. Howard's request to write a preface to this work, and I start with full knowledge of my inability to do justice to the writings of so great a master and genius. Books on voice culture are no more a novelty. I am certain, however, that in this, Mr. Howard has written a work of the greatest interest and benefit to students of vocal culture. That he is the foremost scientist living, on the voice - or for that matter that has ever lived - there is not the slightest doubt in the mind of anyone who has given the subject serious study. The ground-breaking, comprehensively rational and scientific critical analysis of modern methods of singing instruction. Probably the single most useful book on singing ever written, this work is a critical analysis which exposes the shortcomings and failures of modern methods of singing instructions. Having done so, it then proceeds to elaborate on the superceded method, namely bel canto or the so called old Italian method. The author establishes the validity of the latter method by reference to the results it obtained. He convincingly argues that the decline in the quality of singers can be arrested only by a return to the bel canto method. A peculiar gap exists between the accepted theoretical basis of instruction in singing and the actual methods of vocal teachers. Part I of this work contains a review of modern methods. In Part II a critical analysis is offered of certain theories of the vocal action which receive much attention in practical instruction. Part III contains a summary of all present knowledge of the voice. In Part IV the information about the vocal action obtained from the two sources is combined -the scientific knowledge of mechanical processes, and the empirical knowledge derived from attentive listening to voices.
