NASA publicist Emily Durham bows to no man. Mostly because if she did, she’d be at an awkward crotch level thanks to her petite stature. Besides, big things are overrated. Just like a certain astronaut she knows… Chief Astronaut Luke Bisbee is used to having all eyes on him. Kind of hard not to when he’s the tallest and largest in the room—whether on Earth on in space. So he makes it a point to smile and look as unthreatening as possible, especially when cameras turn his way. Bonus points for when every smile thrown at Em, his captivatingly cute PR manager, gets a glare tossed back at him in return. When NASA’s charity event to raise money for STEM programs spins wildly out of control, morphing into an astronaut bachelor auction, both Em and Luke have to use all their stubborn ingenuity and best camera smiles to keep NASA from looking like an aerospace escort service. But when the last bid is called and Em is left holding the winning ticket will she finally give into Luke’s gravitational pull, or is this mission set to crash land?

While the glories and tragedies of the space shuttle make headlines and move the nation, the story of the shuttle forms an inseparabe part of a lesser-known but no less important drama—the search for a reusable single-stage-to-orbit rocket. Here an award-winning student of space science, Andrew J. Butrica, examines the long and tangled history of this ambitious concept, from it first glimmerings in the 1920s, when technicians dismissed it as unfeasible, to its highly expensive heyday in the midst of the Cold War, when conservative-backed government programs struggled to produce an operational flight vehicle. Butrica finds a blending of far-sighted engineering and heavy-handed politics. To the first and oldest idea—that of the reusable rocket-powered single-stage-to-orbit vehicle—planners who belonged to what President Eisenhower referred to as the military-industrial complex.added experimental ("X"), "aircraft-like" capabilties and, eventually, a "faster, cheaper, smaller" managerial approach. Single Stage to Orbit traces the interplay of technology, corporate interest, and politics, a combination that well served the conservative space agenda and ultimately triumphed—not in the realization of inexpensive, reliable space transport—but in a vision of space militarization and commercialization that would appear settled United States policy in the early twenty-first century. -- D. This report is the result of a three-year programme of research which examines the benefits of single rooms in acute hospital accommodation and establishes the minimum space requirements around the hospital bed. It will underpin the updating of HBN 4, ccurrently in progress. The main issues addressed are: contributing to control of healthcare associated infections; complying with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995; meeting the needs of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, particularly with regards to lifting patients; meeting the needs of patient privacy and choice. The report seesk affordable solutions encompassing all these issues. It concludes that single rooms provide considerable benefits for patients, clinicians and NHS trusts through helping in infection control, reducing the risk of adverse clinical errors, allowing privacy, and providing flexibility with the potential for increased capacity.

The remarkable story of the trailblazers and the ordinary Americans on the front lines of the epic mission to reach the moon. President John F. Kennedy astonished the world on May 25, 1961, when he announced to Congress that the United States should land a man on the Moon by 1970. No group was more surprised than the scientists and engineers at NASA, who suddenly had less than a decade to invent space travel. When Kennedy announced that goal, no one knew how to navigate to the Moon. No one knew how to build a rocket big enough to reach the Moon, or how to build a computer small enough (and powerful enough) to fly a spaceship there. No one knew what the surface of the Moon was like, or what astronauts could eat as they flew there. On the day of Kennedy’s historic speech, America had a total of fifteen minutes of spaceflight experience—with just five of those minutes outside the atmosphere. Russian dogs had more time in space than U.S. astronauts. Over the next decade, more than 400,000 scientists, engineers, and factory workers would send 24 astronauts to the Moon. Each hour of space flight would require one million hours of work back on Earth to get America to the Moon on July 20, 1969. More than fifty years later, One Giant Leap is the sweeping, definitive behind-the-scenes account of the furious race to complete one of mankind’s greatest achievements. It’s a story filled with surprises—from the item the astronauts almost forgot to take with them (the American flag), to the extraordinary impact Apollo would have back on Earth, and on the way we live today. Charles Fishman introduces readers to the men and women who had to solve 10,000 problems before astronauts could reach the Moon. From the research labs of MIT, where the eccentric and legendary pioneer Charles Draper created the tools to fly the Apollo spaceships, to the factories where dozens of women sewed spacesuits, parachutes, and even computer hardware by hand, Fishman captures the exceptional feats of these ordinary Americans. One Giant Leap is the captivating story of men and women charged with changing the world as we knew it—their leaders, their triumphs, their near disasters, all of which led to arguably the greatest success story, and the greatest adventure story, of the twentieth century.

Probable Impossibilities written by Alan Lightman and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-19 with Science categories.

The acclaimed author of Einstein’s Dreams tackles "big questions like the origin of the universe and the nature of consciousness ... in an entertaining and easily digestible way” (Wall Street Journal) with a collection of meditative essays on the possibilities—and impossibilities—of nothingness and infinity, and how our place in the cosmos falls somewhere in between. Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, whom The Washington Post has called “the poet laureate of science writers,” explores these questions and more—from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang. Probable Impossibilities is a deeply engaged consideration of what we know of the universe, of life and the mind, and of things vastly larger and smaller than ourselves.
