Single Pantofel adalah cerita pendek yang berkisah tentang seorang gadis usia 25 tahun bernama Matilda yang sangat berharap dapat menikah dengan pangeran di negerinya. Namun, kenyataan pahit harus Matilda terima saat mengetahui bahwa sang pangeran telah menemukan calon istrinya melalui sayembara tinggi badan yang menurutnya sangat tidak masuk akal. Untuk menepis kesedihannya, Matilda menelusuri jalanan pedesaan dan berhenti tidak jauh dari Sungai Afton. Dia berteriak, memohon agar bisa bertemu dengan seorang pangeran dari negeri lain. Kemudian dia melepas sepatu bootnya dan menyeberangi sungai untuk memungut daun-daun maple yang berguguran di permukaan air yang mengalir tenang. Saat itulah Matilda melihat deretan semak-semak tinggi di seberang sungai yang terlihat mencurigakan. Setelah Matilda menyibak semak itu dan masuk ke dalamnya, dia berada di tempat lain yang terasa asing. Semua orang melihat heran ke arahnya yang bertelanjang kaki. Matilda juga ikut menyaksikan pasukan berbaju putih sedang melakukan upacara pengibaran bendera. Di antara kerumunan, Matilda berkenalan dengan seorang pria bernama Jefri yang selalu menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaannya. Tanpa terduga, sepatu salah satu anggota pasukan pengibar bendera terlepas. Matilda langsung mengambil sepatu itu dan berniat untuk mengembalikannya. Setelah upacara usai, Jefri mengajak Matilda untuk bertemu pemilik sepatu yang terlepas. Ternyata Jefri adalah salah seorang pelatih pasukan pengibar bendera dan memperkenalkannya pada seorang pemuda bernama Wira, sang pemilik sepatu. Untuk beberapa saat mereka mengobrol banyak hal. Ketika mengetahui bahwa Negara Indonesia, tempatnya berada sekarang tidak dipimpin oleh seorang pangeran, melainkan seorang presiden yang telah memiliki cucu, Matilda menyimpulkan bahwa harapannya telah pupus. Dia pun berpamitan dengan Wira, menyusuri taman bunga dengan hati yang sedih dan kakinya yang telanjang. Matilda berpikir bahwa lebih baik dia bunuh diri saja. Tepat saat itu, Wira memanggilnya dan menyerahkan sepasang sepatu dari Jefri untuknya. Sepatu pantofel hitam mengkilap. Bahkan, Wira berjongkok untuk memakaikan sepatu di kakinya. Matilda merasa bahagia. Ketika Wira bertanya akan ke mana dia pergi, Matilda menjawab bahwa dia akan ke taman di belakangnya dan betapa terkejut dirinya melihat deretan semak tinggi yang telah membawanya ke tempat itu. Dengan gembira, Matilda berlari dengan satu sepatu yang telah terpasang di kaki kanannya, sedangkan satu sepatu lagi masih berada di tangan Wira. Matilda berniat menunjukkan tempat asalnya pada Wira, namun sayang, ketika Matilda telah masuk ke dalam semak dan melihat Sungai Afton lagi, tempat di balik semak itu telah menghilang. Termasuk Wira. Dia menyibak semak itu berkali-kali tetapi hanya hutan belantara yang terlihat. Matilda menyesal telah kembali. Matilda menyadari bahwa Wira adalah pangeran hatinya. Dia sangat berharap dapat bertemu kembali dengan Wira suatu hari nanti.

Rossetti’s Armadillo is Charles S. Kraszewski’s attempt at fulfilling the desiderata expressed by George Steiner in the introduction to his Penguin Book of Modern Verse Translation.
