The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are cylindrical one-dimensional nanomaterials made of single-layered graphene sheets. They possess unique properties because of their specific structure. Due to their distinct electronic structure and impressive thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, SWCNTs have great applications in biomedicine, energy storage, nanomechanical devices, etc. So far, many methods have been developed to synthesize SWCNTs. Despite the great achievements in the synthesis and applications of SWCNTs in the past few decades, many challenges remain. This primer will equip the reader with a foundational understanding of the growth mechanisms of SWCNTs and the advantages and disadvantages of the process and growth conditions of the various techniques. The reader will also learn how to relate the properties and structure of these materials to their specific functionality in the desired application.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ELECTRONIC CHARACTERIZATION OF INDIVIDUAL SINGLE-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES Submitted by Wong Chi Yan for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in September 2007 The outstanding properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted con- siderable research effort in the last decade. CNTs are quasi-one-dimensional materials which can be used to study fundamental quantum effects of one- dimensional systems. TherehasbeenagreatdealofinterestspecificallyinsemiconductingCNTs, which have shown to be promising candidates as the building blocks for the next-generation electronic applications. Carbon nanotube electronic devices have the potential to replace conventional silicon-based counterparts. How- ever, there are still obstacles that remain with regard to the scientific study or application oriented researches. For example, the growth orientation and the band gaps of individual CNTs are difficult to control. In addition, pronounced low-frequency current fluctuation, 1/f noise, exists. The measured noise levelisevencomparabletothesignallevelundersomecircumstances, therebylimit- ing the application of CNTs in low-signal electronics and the overall reliability of CNT based devices. In this thesis, single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) were chosen as a studying modelduetotheirsimplicityinnature. DifferentmethodsofindividualSWNT fieldeffecttransistor(FET)fabricationmethodswerecompared. Themethods included: (I) Directed growth of ultra long SWNTs on a wafer by CVD using ethanol, and (II) Dispersing the SWNTs fabricated by ordinary CVD, on the wafer with organic solvents. The noise behavior for both fabrication methods were characterized by DAQ and lock-in noise measurement methods. Thereafter, thebasicI-V measurementsoffabricatedSWNTFETdevices were also performed. The hysteresis effect and its time dependent measure- ments in FETs were illustrated. The measurements results suggested that the hysteresis effect in nanotube devices was attributed to the charge traps in the oxide layer of FETs. Finally, the 1/f noise of SWNT FETs was studied. It was shown that the 1/f noise arose from the carrier number fluctuations rather than mobility fluctuations, as a superposition of Lorentzian fluctuation spectra. The corre- -2 sponding Hooge constant was found to be gate dependent and about 10 in thelinearregime. Bycomparingwiththereportedsimulationresultofrandom telegraphsignal(RTS)noiseamplitudeinsubthresholdregime, itwasproposed that such Lorentzian fluctuation spectra were due to the RTS noise, arising from the gate potential fluctuations in the CNT, and the charge exchange be- tween CNT and oxide layer. These potential fluctuations were attributed to trapped charges in the oxide nearby which changed the number of carriers in the CNTs. A thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor was built and used to grow vertically and horizontally aligned carbon nanotube arrays. The as-grown nanotubes were investigated on a single tube level using near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) microscopy and PL excitation spectroscopy as well as Raman, atomic force and scanning electron microscopy. The PL of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in different surroundings and at temperatures down to 4 K was analyzed. Ultralong CVD-grown nanotubes were imaged on Si/SiO2 to determine their chirality and to check structural integrity along the nanotube length. Furthermore, ultralong SWNTs were manipulated (moved, bent and fractured) employing an AFM. Finally, a new approach to determine relative abundances and PL quantum yields of semiconducting SWNTs in dispersions is presented, which is based on statistical counting of individual nanotubes by means of PL spectroscopy.

The Springer Handbook of Nanomaterials covers the description of materials which have dimension on the "nanoscale". The description of the nanomaterials in this Handbook follows the thorough but concise explanation of the synergy of structure, properties, processing and applications of the given material. The Handbook mainly describes materials in their solid phase; exceptions might be e.g. small sized liquid aerosols or gas bubbles in liquids. The materials are organized by their dimensionality. Zero dimensional structures collect clusters, nanoparticles and quantum dots, one dimensional are nanowires and nanotubes, while two dimensional are represented by thin films and surfaces. The chapters in these larger topics are written on a specific materials and dimensionality combination, e.g. ceramic nanowires. Chapters are authored by well-established and well-known scientists of the particular field. They have measurable part of publications and an important role in establishing new knowledge of the particular field.

It is about 15 years that the carbon nanotubes have been discovered by Sumio Iijima in a transmission electron microscope. Since that time, these long hollow cylindrical carbon molecules have revealed being remarkable nanostructures for several aspects. They are composed of just one element, Carbon, and are easily produced by several techniques. A nanotube can bend easily but still is very robust. The nanotubes can be manipulated and contacted to external electrodes. Their diameter is in the nanometer range, whereas their length may exceed several micrometers, if not several millimeters. In diameter, the nanotubes behave like molecules with quantized energy levels, while in length, they behave like a crystal with a continuous distribution of momenta. Depending on its exact atomic structure, a single-wall nanotube –that is to say a nanotube composed of just one rolled-up graphene sheet– may be either a metal or a semiconductor. The nanotubes can carry a large electric current, they are also good thermal conductors. It is not surprising, then, that many applications have been proposed for the nanotubes. At the time of writing, one of their most promising applications is their ability to emit electrons when subjected to an external electric field. Carbon nanotubes can do so in normal vacuum conditions with a reasonable voltage threshold, which make them suitable for cold-cathode devices.
