In einem zweiten Teil charakterisiert er Formen des expliziten Gedächtnisses - wie Datum, Bild, Phantom - als Reflexionsfiguren dieser Zeitlichkeit. An dem komplexen und prekären Bezug auf das Vergangensein des Vergangenen werden Aporien aufgewiesen, die nicht nur die Struktur des Gedächtnisses ausmachen, sondern die innere Unruhe und Offenheit des Sinns selbst begründen. Im Anschluss an Luhmann, Derrida und Wittgenstein macht Khurana so den grundlegenden Charakter von Gedächtnis deutlich, der jene Zeitlichkeit fundiert, die in der jüngeren Sprachphilosophie so auffällig ignoriert wird und die doch konstitutiv ist für die Form sinnhafter Praktiken.

How was the Jewish tradition reinvented in Russian-Jewish literature after a long period of assimilation, the Holocaust, and decades of Communism? The process of reinventing the tradition began in the counter-culture of Jewish dissidents, in the midst of the late-Soviet underground of the 1960-1970s, and it continues to the present day. In this period, Jewish literature addresses the reader of the ‘post-human’ epoch, when the knowledge about traditional Jewry and Judaism is received not from the family members or the collective environment, but rather from books, paintings, museums and popular culture. Klavdia Smola explores how contemporary Russian-Jewish literature turns to the traditions of Jewish writing, from biblical Judaism to early-Soviet (anti-)Zionist novels, and how it ‘re-writes’ Haskalah satire, Hassidic Midrash or Yiddish travelogues.

History and memory rank as central themes in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. As one of the last philosophers of the 19th century, Nietzsche naturally belongs to the so-called ‘historical century’. The contentious exchange with the past and with antiquity – as much as the mechanisms, the dangers, and the lessons of memory and tradition – are continually examined and stand in close relationship with Nietzsche’s vision of life and his project of human development. As Jacob Burckhardt once wrote of the cultural critique to his Basel colleague: "Fundamentally, you are always teaching history" (9/13/1882). Following Burckhardt’s judgment, the contributors focus on the analysis of core questions in the philosophies of history and memory, and their respective convergence in the thought of Nietzsche. The epistemological relevance of these central concepts will be thematized alongside those concerning tradition, and education. The discussion of these rich themes unifies a broad spectrum of questions, ranging from cultural memory to contemporary philosophy of mind. The contributions are revised versions of selected papers presented at the 2018 conference of the annual meeting of the Nietzsche Society in Naumburg.
