The situation of the Roma in Europe, especially in the former communist states, is one of the more important human rights issues on the agenda of the international community, especially in the Euro-Atlantic bodies of integration. Within European states that have Roma populations there is a growing awareness that the matter must be confronted, and that there is a need for a concentrated effort to solve social problems and ease tensions between the Roma and the European nations among which they dwell. This volume is the result of an international conference held at Tel Aviv University in December 2002. The conference, one of the largest held among the academic community in the last decade, served as a unique forum for a multidisciplinary discussion on the past and present of the Roma in which both Roma and non-Roma scholars from various countries engaged.

Explores the life of the Sinti and Roma in Germany, their representation in German literature, and the relationship between the German and Romani languages. Gives background to Gypsy maltreatment and underlines the fact that the persecution of Gypsies during the Nazi period did not cease until 1945. The continuity of anti-Gypsy sentiment is traced to the present day, and efforts and achievements of the Sinti and Roma civil rights movement are highlighted. This book concerns the persecution of the Sinti and Roma in Germany during the Second Empire (1871–1918) and Weimar Republic (1919–1933). It traces the ways in which discriminatory treatment towards 'Gypsies' developed in a state ostensibly committed to individual liberty and equal treatment under the law, and how government policies in this period furthered their economic marginalisation and social exclusion. It will provide much-needed detail on a crucial period, one which is ordinarily addressed only fleetingly, and by way of introduction, to studies of how the Sinti and Roma communities were treated by National Socialists.

The Roma In Romanian History written by Viorel Achim and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-01-01 with Social Science categories.

One of the greatest challenges during the process of European Union enlargement towards the east is how the issue of the Roma or Gypsies is tackled. This enormous social and political problem cannot be solved without proper historical studies like this book. Achim presents and interprets the long history of the Gypsies, including slavery, the process of integration and assimilation into the majority population, as well as the historical roots of the marginalization of the Gypsies. The deportation of Gypsies to Transnistria during the Antonescu regime, between 1942 and 1944, is reconstructed in a separate chapter. The closing chapters elaborate on the policy toward the Gypsies in the decades after the Second World War, and its bearing on the situation of the Roma population in today's Romania.

The Nazi Genocide Of The Roma written by Anton Weiss-Wendt and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-01 with History categories.

Using the framework of genocide, this volume analyzes the patterns of persecution of the Roma in Nazi-dominated Europe. Detailed case studies of France, Austria, Romania, Croatia, Ukraine, and Russia generate a critical mass of evidence that indicates criminal intent on the part of the Nazi regime to destroy the Roma as a distinct group. Other chapters examine the failure of the West German State to deliver justice, the Romani collective memory of the genocide, and the current political and historical debates. As this revealing volume shows, however inconsistent or geographically limited, over time, the mass murder acquired a systematic character and came to include ever larger segments of the Romani population regardless of the social status of individual members of the community.

The second edition of Right to Remember incorporates some small revisions into the original publication. Since it was first published (in 2014), Right to Remember has been widely used, by both Roma and non-Roma youth groups. The response has been almost overwhelmingly positive, but inevitably there have been some suggestions for clarification, amendments, or inclusion of additional material. Certain groups or individuals working on the Roma Genocide have also been kind enough to respond to a call for feedback on the publication. Right to Remember is a self-contained educational resource for all those wishing to promote a deeper awareness of the Roma Genocide and combat discrimination. The handbook is based on the principles of human rights education, and places remembrance as an aspect of learning about, through and for human rights. Strengthening the identity of Roma young people is a priority for the Roma Youth Action Plan of the Council of Europe. This implies the creation of an environment where they can grow up free from discrimination and confident about their identity and future perspectives, while appreciating their history and their plural cultural backgrounds and affiliations. The Roma Genocide carried out before and during the Second World War has deeply impacted on Roma communities across Europe and plays a central role in understanding the prevailing antigypsyim and discrimination against Roma. Learning about the Genocide is very important for all young people. For Roma young people it is also a way to understand what was perpetrated against their communities, and to help them to com to terms with their identity and situation today. Involving young people, including Roma youth, in researching, discussing and discovering the meanings of the Roma Genocide is a way to involve them as agents and actors in their own understanding of human rights and of history. Right to Remember includes educational activities, as well as ideas for commemoration events, and information about the Genocide and its relevance to the situation of the Roma people today. It has been designed primarily for youth workers in non-formal settings, but it will be useful for anyone working in education, including in schools.
