A decade later, and in the stark aftermath of a devastating storm, the band retreated to a 17th-century mansion house in the deracinated Sussex countryside to write their ninth studio album, Peepshow. Here, the band absorbed the bygone, rural atmosphere and its inspirational mise en scène, thus framing the record cinematically, as Siouxsie Sioux recalled, 'It was as if we were doing the whole thing on the set of The Wicker Man'. Samantha Bennett looks at how Siouxsie and the Banshees' Peepshow is better understood in the context of film and film music (as opposed to popular music studies or, indeed, the works of other rock'n'roll bands). Drawing upon more than one hundred films and film scores, this book focuses on Peepshow's deeply embedded historical and aesthetic (para)cinematic influences: How is each track a reflection of genre film? Who are the various featured protagonists? And how does Peepshow's diverse orchestration, complex musical forms, atypical narratives and evocative soundscapes reveal an inherently cinematic record? Ultimately, Peepshow can be read as a soundtrack to all the films Siouxsie and the Banshees ever saw. Or perhaps it was the soundtrack to the greatest film they never made.

Monday 20th September 1976 saw one of the most unexpected moments in music history when what was to become one of the most iconic, important and mimicked bands of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s took to the stage at The 100 Club in Oxford Street, London. A last-minute addition to the '100 Club Punk Special' that included The Clash, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and The Damned, an unknown Siouxsie and The Banshees, comprising Sid Vicious, Steve Severin, Marco Pirroni and Siouxsie Sioux, unleashed twenty minutes of 'performance art' improvisation, featuring fragments of 'Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles', 'Twist And Shout' and 'Satisfaction'. 'The Lord's Prayer', which was to become a staple of Siouxsie and The Banshees' early live repertoire, was a white-noise assault on the senses and a barometer of the alienation many teenagers felt from the bloated nature of mid-1970s 'arena rock'. Several line-up changes later, in 1978, Siouxise and The Banshees were propelled into the pop stratosphere. Signed to a major record label, the band released 'Hong Kong Garden' and wrote one of the most influential post-punk albums of all time, The Scream, a savage critique of curtain-twitching suburbia, the cheap titillation of the tabloids, and the dangers of believing and following any one doctrine. 1979's Join Hands, influenced by the political landscape in Britain and further afield, and the catastrophic loss of life in World War One, was a milestone of the band's increasing maturity, from the adrenaline-fuelled stomp of 'Icon' to the phased guitar, saxophone and bells of 'Playground Twist'. After a tour fraught with fractiousness, a new line up with Slits' drummer Budgie and Magazine guitarist John McGeoch, together with Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin, released the band's most experimental album, Kaleidoscope, which was a heady mix of psychedelia and sonorous adventures including the singles 'Happy House' and 'Christine'. Siouxsie and The Banshees The Early Years explores the adventures, trials and tribulations of a band defying categorisation. Their uncompromising brilliance is exemplified by three unique albums, which are chronicled in the pages of this authoritative survey.

Siouxsie and the Banshees were a rock group, formed in London, England, UK during 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bass guitarist Steven Severin. They've been widely influential to their contemporaries then over later artists. Mojo rated guitarist John McGeoch in their list of '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time' for his playing on Spellbound. The Times newspaper cited the band as 'one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era'. First associated with the punk scene, the Banshees rapidly evolved to create 'a form of post-punk discord, full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation". Their debut L.P. The Scream was released in 1978 to critical acclaim but they changed their musical direction becoming 'almost a different band' with Kaleidoscope (1980), which hit UK # 5 on the Albums Chart. With Juju (1981), which also reached the top 10, the group became an influence on the emerging gothic scene. The Banshees broke through in North America during 1988, with the multifaceted L.P. Peepshow, which received critical acclaim. They had a mainstream hit in the US in 1991, following significant support from alternative rock radio stations, with the single "Kiss Them for Me". The band issued 11 studio albums and 30 singles during their career, with several line-up changes, Siouxsie and Severin being the only constant members. They split up during 1996, with Siouxsie and drummer Budgie continuing to record as the Creatures, a 2nd group they'd formed in the early '80s, before Siouxsie began a solo career during 2004.
