Description: Correspondence continues from the previous year's file in relation to the two portraits of airmen, Rhys Davids and Hoidge, in particular requests for reproductions, and the question of whether Hoidge's name and details of his exploits could be mentioned. As Rhys Davids had been captain of Eton, the school requested a copy of the portrait, and Orpen agreed to produce a copy for Davids' family. (This had still not been carried out by August 1920 - see file /92, (165)). In a letter, Orpen states his intention to present all of his war commission work to the Imperial War Museum. However, there was subsequent confusion over whether Orpen was entitled to do so, as Masterman argued that the Ministry of Information had first choice over all of Orpen's output. Orpen returned to England for a time in April. Around this time, questions were raised over his paintings of 'The Spy', the identity of the subject and the circumstances of the story. Orpen's responses are somewhat evasive, and he describes the matter as "a ticklish business". In fact, the subject was his mistress, Yvonne Aubicq, and the pictures were later retitled 'The Refugee' (A) and (B). Plans were made for Orpen to go to Italy, but as events leading to the end of the war unfolded in France, it was agreed that he would stay there. He returned to France in July. The papers also relate to the Orpen exhibition at Agnew's, and the painting 'Some members of the Allied Press Camp' (IWM:ART 2971). Orpen was desperate to remain in France - "my native land"--And was willing to forego expenses, but there was some confusion on this subject. After the Armistice, arrangements were made for Orpen to paint the Versailles peace conference, which he was keen to do, although he also repeatedly urged Yockney to obtain the necessary permits for him to be able to document the entries into numerous liberated cities. The file also relates to numerous other portraits, including the First Chief Controller, QMAAC in France, Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan CBE DSC (IWM:ART 3048).

The best known of the Official War Artists sent to France, Orpen was the only one to publish an extensive memoir of his experiences and observations. He was a talented writer, and his accounts of the last two years of the Great War and the Peace Conference that followed it are vivid, lucid and shrewd. This compelling book was first published in 1921.

William Orpen (1878-1931) was in 1917 appointed as an official war artist in France. He not only saw the Great War as a call to paint serious subject-matter—enabling him to break away from the constraints of society portraiture in London—but also as an opportunity to write. Orpen was commissioned, along with artists such as Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer and Wyndham Lewis, to paint for the Department of Information. He was the only war artist to keep a written record of his wartime experience, published in 1921 as An Onlooker in France. In his Preface, Orpen rather too modestly states: “This book must not be considered as a serious work on life in France behind the lines, it is merely an attempt to record some certain little incidents that occurred in my own life there.” This art-historical study is a companion to this “attempt”. It examines, within the context of the global crisis that WWI was, and from various theoretical, philosophical and literary angles, his singular and at times provocative work. Orpen set out to provide a textual and visual record of life on the Western Front, as well as behind the lines—of what was supposed to be the “War to End all Wars”. For want of being a “fighting man”, the non-combatant artist-writer determined to fight with his own arms, his pens and brushes.

Description: After much confusion from the various interested parties, including Masterman, Buchan, various military representatives both in London and at the Front, and Beaverbrook at the Canadian War Memorials Committee, Orpen finally left for France in early April 1917 on a Wellington House commission. Although the main purpose was "big permanent paintings of value", Masterman was keen that Orpen should send back sketches that could be reproduced immediately "in order that we might show that his work is being used for national purposes", particularly to justify Orpen's presence there when other artists were "madly jealous". Letters from Orpen repeatedly stated how much he was enjoying the experience: "I have never been so interested in my life". There was also some confusion over terms and commitments, including an earlier commitment on Orpen's part to carry out work for the Canadian War Memorials Committee, and the issue of whether he should work on portraits or actual scenes of the war. The file includes a letter from Maurice Baring, at the Royal Flying Corps HQ, which coincidentally mentions a new edition of his 'A Year in Russia' which Orpen has previously read and which "has proved in some way prophetic". Some of the letters include small sketches to help identify drawings being sent back: German Prisoners Captured at Messines; The End of a Hero and a Tank at Courcelette; The Warwickshires Entering Peronne, March 1917 (IWM:ART 2986); Men in the Trenches near Hendicourt (IWM: ART 3041) (37) Men Resting, Bapaume Road (IWM:ART 2375); A Man Thinking (IWM:ART 2987); General Birdwood returning to his Headquarters (IWM:ART 3028); Entrance to a Dug-out, Beaumont-Hamel (IWM:ART 3029). The file records that the National War Museum had requested the originals of any works produced during Orpen's commission. By October 1917 Orpen was able to write that he had produced "some 30 odd canvases, and 80 or 90 drawings", which he offered to present to the nation, on condition that he could remain in France working for the British Government. "I know the work is bad but it is of certain interest in so much as the subjects never can or will be done again". The files also refer to his two portraits of "leading flying boys", Rhys Davids (IWM:ART 3004) and R T C Hoidge (IWM:ART 2996). In October 1917 Orpen was taken ill with "red blood poisoning." A letter refers to works recently sent over: IWM:ART 2984, 3024, 2990 and 3018.

The official war art schemes established by the British Government during the First World War were intended to satisfy the public desire for information about the Western Front. But as the war continued and its impact widened, so did the ambition of the schemes.Artists such as Paul Nash and Eric Kennington, returning from front line service, brought back a darker and more disturbing picture of modern warfare. Their appointment as official artists alongside established artists such as William Orpen and John Lavery created a hugely diverse and influential collection where the art of the radical younger generation, influenced by modernist movements, sat alongside established Edwardian artists

Armistice Day in 1918 was arguably the most joyous day of the 20th century. As the guns fell silent, crowds celebrated across the Western world. The foremost artists of all nations including Pierre Bonnard in Paris and Gilbert Beal in New York, were inspired to convey the emotions of the historic moment. The Irish painter William Orpen was in Amiens. The tense and difficult process of making the peace ensued. Orpen and Augustus John were assigned as official artists at the Versailles conference. Painters also recorded on canvas the extraordinary closing events of the War, including the surrender of the entire German battle fleet. One hundred years on, The Armistice and the Aftermath brings together in one book a superb collection of the most epic paintings of the era. The result, with informed and perceptive commentary, is a unique record of those momentous days which not only re-drew the world map but, more ominously, shaped the future of the 20th Century.
