Struktur cangkang dan struktur bidang lipat merupakan struktur “pendobrak” pada awal era modern, yang didominasi bangunan konstruksi baja. Dua struktur yang terutama menggunakan bahan beton bertulang itu dapat dikatakan masih satu keluarga “form resistance structure”, yaitu struktur yang dapat menahan beban karena diberi bentuk tertentu. Kedua struktur ini sempat mengalami “kejatuhan” pada awal tahun 70-an akibat makin mahalnya tenaga kerja untuk menyediakan perancah dan pengecoran beton. Namun keduanya kembali bangkit dengan kemungkinan desain konstruksi prefabrikasi komponen-komponen, penggunaan metode prategang untuk memperkuat dan menambah besar bentang, bantuan komputer untuk mendesain serta penghitungan strukturnya, serta metode perancah membran yang relatif mudah dan murah. Gambar di samping memperlihatkan proses pelaksanaan struktur cangkang dengan metode prefabrikasi untuk kubah-kubah struktur cangkang beton pada bangunan bandara internasional Ratu Alia di Amman, Yordania, karya desain Norman Foster & rekan yang selesai dibangun pada 2012. Pesona struktur kabel mengejutkan dunia terutama saat karya Frei Otto diwujudkan dalam Anjungan Jerman Barat pada Expo 1967, Montreal. Setelah itu, Frei Otto dan timnya bersama pemenang kompetisi desain stadion dan fasilitas olahraga Olimpiade 1972 di Munich, Jerman (Barat), Behnisch & rekan, membuat rancangan atap stadion yang baru dengan bentuk-bentuk yang terkesan ringan, penuh cahaya, mengalir, menyatu, istimewa, dan mencengangkan. Pesona tension structure ini masih bertahan dan berjaya hingga 42 tahun kemudian, saat stadion sepak bola Maracana di Rio de Janairo, Brazil, direkonstruksi menggunakan atap berstruktur kabel dengan penutup atap membran untuk pertandingan Piala Dunia FIFA tahun 2014. Schlaich Bergermann & rekan berhasil mendesain dan melaksanakan renovasi stadion sepak bola itu dengan struktur atap yang luar biasa. Keajaiban demi keajaiban pun terus bermunculan dengan struktur (tahan) tarik ini. Struktur rangka ruang merupakan struktur yang paling fleksibel. Struktur ini dapat mewujudkan bentuk apa pun yang dikehendaki arsitek, baik untuk atap maupun dinding fasad. Namun, struktur rangka ruang masih berupa rangka atap atau dinding bangunan sehingga masih membutuhkan komponen penutup. Kombinasi struktur rangka ruang dan struktur membran atau pneumatik merupakan kombinasi yang sering diwujudkan arsitek akhir-akhir ini. Berikut ini tampak struktur rangka ruang Pusat Akuatika Nasional di Beijing yang juga disebut Water Cube karena bentuknya yang mirip kubus—dilengkapi dengan penutup atap dan fasad yang terbuat dari struktur pneumatik ETFE. Fasilitas Olimpiade 2008, Beijing, ini didesain oleh PTW Architects, CSCEC, CCDI, dan Arup.

This is an essential aid in the initial design and planning of a project. The relevant building type is located by a comprehensive index and cross reference system, a condensed commentary covers user requireements, planning criteria, basic dimensions and other considerations of function, siting aspect etc. A system of references based on an extensive bibliography supports the text.
