Todas y cada una de las células del cuerpo reciben nutrición y oxígeno a través del sistema cardiovascular, que bombea sangre por todo el cuerpo. Está formado por las venas sanguíneas que recorren el cuerpo y el corazón. La sangre es transportada desde el corazón por las arterias y regresada a él por las venas. El sistema vascular sanguíneo es como un árbol: el "tronco", la arteria principal (aorta), se ramifica en arterias enormes, que conducen a vasos cada vez más pequeños. La red capilar, una red de vasos minúsculos, es donde terminan las arterias más pequeñas. El cuerpo humano tiene dos sistemas de circulación sanguínea interconectados, no solo uno: la sangre llega a los órganos, tejidos y células a través de la circulación sistémica, lo que les permite absorber oxígeno y otros nutrientes esenciales. El nuevo oxígeno que respiramos ingresa al torrente sanguíneo a través de la circulación pulmonar. La sangre libera dióxido de carbono al mismo tiempo. El corazón comienza a hacer circular sangre cuando se relaja entre latidos. La sangre ingresa a los ventrículos, las dos cámaras inferiores del corazón, después de pasar por las dos cámaras superiores o aurículas. La siguiente etapa se conoce como fase de eyección, durante la cual ambos ventrículos bombean la sangre hacia las arterias principales. La sangre rica en oxígeno es bombeada hacia la arteria principal (aorta) por el ventrículo izquierdo como parte de la circulación sistémica. La sangre fluye hacia la red capilar a través de arterias más grandes y más pequeñas después de salir de la arteria principal. Allí, la sangre recoge materiales de desecho y dióxido de carbono mientras libera oxígeno, nutrientes y otros componentes esenciales. La sangre fluye hacia la aurícula derecha y luego hacia el ventrículo derecho a través de las venas después de haber perdido gran parte de su oxígeno. Este es el punto de partida de la circulación pulmonar: la arteria pulmonar recibe sangre con poco oxígeno del ventrículo derecho y luego se divide en arterias y capilares progresivamente más pequeños. Alrededor de las vesículas pulmonares (sacos de aire con forma de uva al final de las vías respiratorias) los capilares forman una pequeña red. Aquí es donde ingresa nuevo oxígeno al torrente sanguíneo y el dióxido de carbono se expulsa de la sangre al aire de las vesículas pulmonares. El dióxido de carbono sale de nuestro cuerpo cuando exhalamos. La sangre con alto contenido de oxígeno ingresa al ventrículo izquierdo a través de la aurícula izquierda y las venas pulmonares. El siguiente latido del corazón inicia un nuevo ciclo de circulación sistémica.
