When Sister Dolorosa had reached the summit of a low hill on her way to the convent, she turned and stood for a while looking backward. The landscape stretched away in a rude, unlovely expanse of grey fields, shaded in places by brown stubble, and in others lightened by pale, thin corn-the stunted reward of necessitous husbandry. This way and that ran wavering lines of low fences, some worm-eaten, others rotting beneath over-clambering wild-rose and blackberry.

In 'Sister Dolorosa, and Posthumous Fame', James Lane Allen engages the reader with two distinct yet thematically coherent short stories that deftly explore the nuances of everyday life. Allen's prose is laced with realism, focusing not only on the physical but also the emotional and psychological landscapes of his characters. The narrative reveals a mosaic of life's love and tribulations amidst simplicity, encapsulating the vast spectrum of human emotion in seemingly ordinary situations. The stories' vivid depictions and deep-rooted connections to Allen's community offer a window to the 19th-century American South, adding a layer of cultural specificity to its universal themes. James Lane Allen, a native of Kentucky, belonged to the school of American Realism, which sought to depict life as it was, rather than how it could be idealized. His attention to detail and commitment to the authentic portrayal of his environment undoubtedly derive from his upbringing during a period of significant change after the Civil War. The stories within 'Sister Dolorosa, and Posthumous Fame' reflect his belief in the captivating power of ordinary existence and could very well be a literary echo of his own experiences and observations. This collection is an indispensable addition to the personal library of anyone who cherishes American literary realism and the exploration of subtle human dynamics against a backdrop of a simpler time. It is particularly recommended for readers who seek a resonant, immersive experience rooted in reality, yet enriched with the emotional depth and complexities of life's quieter beats. James Lane Allen's depiction of life's unvarnished beauty will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the discerning reader.

"These little stories were written about the villiage people of New England. They are studies of the descendents of the Massachusetts Bay colonists, in whom can still be seen traces of those features of will and conscience, so strong as to be almost exaggerations and deformities, which characterised their ancestors."--Author's preface to the Edinburgh Edition.
