El objetivo de esta publicación es ofrecer un diagnóstico sobre el estado actual de la religión analizando diferentes aspectos de la vida religiosa de los españoles a principios del siglo XXI. En este número de Opiniones y Actitudes, Alfonso Pérez-Agote y José A. Santiago García estudian la situación religiosa actual en relación con el proceso de secularización que se inicia en España con la transición democrática. Se trata de un proceso tardío, pero que se desarrolla con rapidez a través de dos fenómenos: la separación entre la Iglesia y el Estado y la caída de los indicadores tradicionales de creencia y práctica religiosa. Partiendo de los datos de la encuesta sobre actitudes y creencias religiosas, elaborada por el CIS, se realiza un análisis descriptivo de distintos indicadores que pueden incidir en el proceso de secularización. Se estudian aspectos relacionados con la importancia de la religión, la autodefinición religiosa, las creencias y prácticas, así como también la reproducción familiar de la religión, su influencia en otras esferas sociales o las opiniones sobre la religión y la Iglesia en España. A su vez, se estudia la relación de estos indicadores con algunas variables sociodemográficas, como el sexo, la edad, el nivel socioeconómico, el nivel de estudios o la ideología política. Una de las principales conclusiones del estudio es que la secularización se produce más por el abandono de la práctica religiosa que por un sentimiento de indiferencia ante la religión y que en dicho proceso influyen dimensiones históricas producto del cambio social y político en la sociedad española, así como otros procesos de desinstitucionalización, subjetivación y privatización de la religión.

Fernando de los Ríos Urruti (Ronda, 1879 – Nueva York, 1949) es uno de los pensadores más originales y relevantes del socialismo español de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Discípulo de Francisco Giner de los Ríos y estrechamente vinculado con los proyectos educativos de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, fue catedrático de Derecho Político en la Universidad de Granada, diputado a Cortes por el PSOE, ministro de Justicia, de Instrucción Pública y de Estado en la Segunda República española, embajador en Washington durante la Guerra Civil y, finalmente, ministro de Estado del Gobierno republicano del exilio. Al final de su vida ejerció la docencia en la prestigiosa New School for Social Research de Nueva York. Si bien es conocido en España por su propuesta teórica de un socialismo humanista no marxista y de profunda raigambre liberal, no lo es tanto por sus sugestivos trabajos sobre la España del siglo XVI. Los textos que integran la presente obra constituyeron en su día una aportación fundamental en este sentido. La fusión de los fines de la Iglesia y del Estado durante la monarquía imperial de Felipe II, vislumbre temprano de lo que andando el tiempo sería la esencia de los Estados totalitarios de la Europa de entreguerras; la contribución de Francisco de Vitoria y los teólogos y juristas españoles del XVI a la creación del Derecho internacional y las consecuencias de la acción colonizadora y conquistadora de América constituyen la variada temática de los ensayos aquí reunidos. Esta tercera edición ampliada incluye un texto hasta ahora inédito en España y no recogido en las Obras completas del autor.
