Excerpt from Six Years of Adventure in Congo-Land Mr. E. J. Glave, the author of this book, is one of those young Englishmen who, in 1883, were sent to me for service on the Congo, by the Chief of the Bureau of the International Association of Brussels. I soon recognized in Mr. Glave those qualities for which I was eagerly searching in the applicants for service, and which were absolutely necessary in a pioneer. He was tall, strong, and of vigorous constitution, with a face marked by earnestness and resolve, and when I began questioning him I was agreeably sur prised to find his sentiments equal to his appearance. His period of probation at Stanley Pool was therefore short. I was in need of a chief for a new station that was to be built at Lukolela - a place about three hundred miles above the Pool, and I selected him. Excerpt from My Adventures in the Congo I started the next day well by having a tussle with the stewardess, who did not want to bring me a cup of coffee. She told me that servants' breakfast was served at however, after a Short but wordy war, I got my coffee. During the day I asked Miss X if I might take my meals with the passengers, pointing out that as I was a first-class passenger it seemed a pity not to have the benefit thereof. To this she agreed, on condition that I sat with the children during their meals, which was no hardship, as they were both charming little folk. After lunching with the passengers a steward told me that the purser wished to see me. When I got to his room he seemed greatly surprised at my appear ance, asked me to sit down, and then told me how the other maids were jealous because I did not take my meals with them. He was easier to deal with than the stewardess, and, squeezing my hand, said, Whenever you want anything, come to me. This was very gratifying. Excerpt from The Adventures of Congo in Search of His Master: An American Tale, Containing a True Account of a Shipwreck and Interspersed With Anecdotes Found on Facts; Illustrated With Engravings This merit in the eyes of children will also recommend the work to such parents, as think with the author, that it is a great pity the young mind should ever lose its preference for truth, and that much harm has been done by allowing so large a portion of juvenile reading to consist of baby novels. The history of Congo, though merely serving to connect the various anecdotes it contains, is also intended to illustrate the force and value of a religious education, and to show how good principles, early imbibed, will enable even a child to resist temptation, and struggle through the greatest difficulties; and that a proper trust and confidence in God soothes the most trying hours, and has its reward even in this world. A Civilised Savagery written by Kevin Grant and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-04 with History categories.

In the two decades before World War One, Great Britain witnessed the largest revival of anti-slavery protest since the legendary age of emancipation in the mid-nineteenth century. Rather than campaigning against the trans-Atlantic slave trade, these latter-day abolitionists focused on the so-called 'new slaveries' of European imperialism in Africa, condemning coercive systems of labor taxation and indentured servitude, as well as evidence of atrocities. A Civilized Savagery illuminates the multifaceted nature of British humanitarianism by juxtaposing campaigns against different forms of imperial labor exploitation in three separate areas: the Congo Free State, South Africa, and Portuguese West Africa. In doing so, Kevin Grant points out how this new type of humanitarianism influenced the transition from Empire to international government and the advent of universal human rights in subsequent decades.
