질풍노도의 시기를 통과 중인 우리들에게 고하는 유쾌한 선언, “즐겁게 살지 않는 것은 죄다!” 아쿠타가와상 수상작가 무라카미 류의 자전적 성장소설. 급성장의 궤도를 달리던 전후 일본사회에서 질풍노도의 시기를 보낸 열일곱 살 청춘들의 축제 같은 이야기를 담았다. 1969년에 고등학교 시절을 보낸 작가가 당시 주변에서 일어난 일을 바탕으로 쓴 『69_sixty nine』은 일본에서만 100만 부 이상의 판매고를 기록하고, 국내에서도 각계각층 명사들의 추천 도서로 꾸준히 언급되는 등 무라카미 류의 대표작으로 확고하게 자리매김한 작품이다. 집필 당시 32세였던 작가는 이 자전소설을 쓰면서 1969년을 “인생에서 세 번째로 재미있었던 해”라고 말했다. 작품 제목인 ‘69’의 1969년은, 파리학생운동의 여파로 도쿄대학이 입시를 중지하고, 히피들은 사랑과 평화를 부르짖고, 드골은 권좌에서 물러나고, 인간이 달에 족적을 남긴 기념비적 해였으며, 한편에선 베트남전쟁의 총성이 들려오던 격동의 시절이었다. 이러한 시대적 배경에, 미군 기지가 주둔하던 작은 도시를 무대로 한 이 소설은 반미를 외치면서도 그들의 문화와 스타에 열광하고, 반전을 외치면서도 예쁜 여학생에게 열광했던 솔직하고 대담한 고교생들의 모습을 그리고 있다. 류의 소설을 많이 접해본 독자라면 『69』가 어딘지 모르게 낯설게 느껴질지도 모른다. 이 낯섦은 아마도 이 소설의 밝은 분위기 때문일 것이다. 류는 후기에 이 책을 “정말 즐거운 소설이다. 이렇게 즐거운 소설은 다시는 쓸 수 없을 것”이라고 말했다. 즐거운 인생을 위해 마치 싸움을 하듯 ‘축제’처럼 살아갈 거라는 작가의 말처럼, ‘어떻게 사는 것이 즐거운 인생인가’에 대해 질문을 던지고 있다. 한편 『69_sixty nine』은 2004년 재일교포 3세로서 청춘들의 삶과 에너지를 감각적으로 그려온 이상일이 감독을 맡고, 츠마부키 사토시와 안도 마사노부가 주연으로 열연한 동명의 영화로 제작된 바 있다. 또한 2018년 극장 ‘아트나인’의 ‘일본영화기획전’을 통해 청춘영화의 명작 〈69 식스티 나인〉이 재개봉되는 등, 국내 처음 출간된 지 17년이 지난 지금까지도 무라카미 류의 애독자와 영화 팬들의 큰 사랑을 받으며 청춘 소설의 고전으로 여전히 깊은 감동을 주고 있다.
