As the first attempt, therefore, in this direction, the editors hope that the present volume on the lives and works of those authors who have been natives of, or intimately connected with Hull, may prove a welcome and useful addition to local literature as a work of reference, besides being of equal interest to the general reader. The Sketches comprise most of those who may be ranked as Hull Authors, and are based on a series of articles which appeared originally in the Eastern Morning News for 1876, and they are now published with considerable additional matter and corrections from the author's notes. I don't agree with the aphorism that a great book is a great evil. It is, at least, a great necessity, if even required only for reference. It is one ofthe privileges of History, says a sage writer, to impart the experience of age without its infirmities - to bring back things long obscured and fast fading away. It enriches the memory with a great variety of important episodes of bygone days. It also teaches us what measures and counsels make the issue of things fortunate, and points out what kind of conduct in volves its authors in ruin. It gives unerringly wise examples for our imitation in a private as well as in a public capacity. If, then, hullinia, will influence my young readers to study those comprehensive and elaborate volumes that have been written upon the rise and progress of our town, and which contain much that is valuable and interesting, my object shall have been accomplished. He has spared no expense of time or labour to render the work complete, and he puts it into the hands of his Subscribers, in the full assurance that they will award him the praise of having, by the simple statement of facts, fully established the point for which he contends. He would have been glad to have the leisure, and, he may add, the ability, to construct from the materials which his resources might have afl'orded him, a history which should have been as gra tifying to the general Reader, as he trusts the Notices, in their present form, will be acceptable to the Antiquary; but whatever might have been his incli nation in this respect, the execution of such a work would, [by the weight of his professional engagements, since the lamented loss of his revered parent and partner, have been rendered impracticable. Jane Addams was a famous social activist living in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century. She’s perhaps most famous for introducing the Settlement movement to the United States and for founding Hull House, a hugely influential settlement house in Chicago. Settlement houses were founded on the idea of uplifting the poor working class by quartering the rich and poor together in close proximity. By living together under the guidance of settlement workers, the poor would have access to communal education, healthcare, day care, food, and shelter, allowing them to improve their positions in society instead of being ground under heel by the privations of poverty and the brutality of workhouses. Immigrants in particular could take advantage of the settlement’s safety net, helping them naturalize more easily in their new country as they struggled to find stability while both working and raising children. Hull House, named after the house’s original owner, was Addams’ life work. It brought together the urban poor—mostly recently-settled immigrants—together into a vast thirteen-building complex near the heart of Chicago’s downtown. In this book Addams describes the house, its founding, and its operations; because running the house was such a major part of her life, she considered this book to be her autobiography of sorts. Hull House remained open until 2012, operating continuously for over 120 years. For her work at Hull House and for her involvement in the Peace Movement of World War I, Addams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the award’s first American woman recipient. At the time of her death she was the most well-known female public figure in America.
