This collection of nineteenth century Lancashire anecdotes and stories, collated by Rochdale born author and poet Edwin Waugh, brings to life the area of 'South Lancashire' (although most towns mentioned would now be considered part of the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester). He writes of Samuel Bamford, a poet known for his campaigning in the Manchester uprising which preceded the Peterloo Massacre. Also worthy of mention is John Collier, known as 'Tom Bobbin', a well-known comedian of his day, born in the 'scattered hamlet of Urmston'; 'A lad whose fame did resound through every village and town around; For fun, for frolic, and for whim.' Although his name may now have sadly passed beyond memory, his birthplace has certainly grown - with a population of 40,000, Urmston would now be considered more of a sprawling town than a scattered hamlet.Humorous, poignant and supernatural tales of Manchester life include The Grave of Grislehurst Boggart, The Knocker-Up and The Complaint of the Sad Complaint. For anyone interested in life in Northern Victorian England, these sketches offer a unique insight into working class Lancashire life.Flying High Press strives to make classic literature available to all, regardless of reading disabilities. This edition is printed in dyslexia-friendly font on cream pages.
