Siciliana Sketches Of Naples And Sicily In The Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Ferdinand Gregorovius and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-26 with Travel categories.

Excerpt from Siciliana Sketches of Naples and Sicily, in the Nineteenth Century The essays here translated are taken for the most part from the third volume of Gregorovius's Wander jahre in Italian, published so long ago as 1853 the last, however, that entitled Segesta, Salinas and Mount Eryx, from his Kleine Schriften, which ap peared thirty-five years later, in 1888. In these days when Italy is such a well-traversed field, when rarely a month, scarcely, indeed, a week passes without bringing some fresh work on Italian history, art, architecture or social life before the public, it may seem that the translation of a series of essays, written, with one exception, more than half a cen tury ago, is uncalled for and demands some word of explanation. Gregorovius, however, was no ordinary traveller or sight-seer, but an eminent scholar, who, with the knowledge of the historian, brought also the imagination of the artist to bear on the scenes he visited; he was, moreover, an author gifted with a power of vivid description such as is vouchsafed to few. Dealing, too, as he does, almost entirely with ancient and mediaeval history, architecture and scenery, his writings seem, to me at least, to retain their freshness and interest un disturbed by the flight of time. Excerpt from Naples To approach Naples to the best advantage, you must go by sea. A wide view is before us of the headlands, softened by distance, and of the harbour, which lies like a great opal reflecting colours and sunshine as glowing as those of the East, and yet far softer. There is some.5 thing Homeric in the setting of this cluster of sea-washed towns, extending in a wide half-circle from Posillipo to Sorrento. In the near background rises the most celebrated volcano in the world, purple Vesuvius, whose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. La belle Écossaise, madame la comtesse me disait ce soir Vos Français, qui brillent tant le premier moment, n'en tendent rien à faire naître les grandes passions. Excerpt from Naples: Past and Present I have designed this book not as a guide, but as supplementary to a guide. The best of guide-books - even that of Murray or of Gsell-Fels - leaves a whole world of thought and knowledge untouched, being indeed of necessity so full of detail that broad, general views can scarcely be obtained from it. In this work detail has been sacrificed without hesitation. I have omitted reference to a few well-known place, usually because I could add nothing to the information given in the handbooks, but in one or two cases because the considerations which they raised lay too far from the thread of my discourse. I have thrown together in the form of an appendix such hints and suggestions as seemed likely to assist anyone who desires wider information than I have given. Excerpt from Naples and Southern Italy To come Naples from Rome through the noble and tragic majesty of the Campagna, along that sombre and yet lovely road under Anagni and Monte Cassino, or to enter it first without warning out of the loneliness, the silence, and the beauty, of the sea, is to experience an astonishing disillusion. For there is nothing, I think, in all the South - nothing certainly in Italy - quite like Naples in its sordid and yet tremendous vitality, a vitality that is sterile, that wastes itself upon itself. The largest and most populous city in the peninsula, it might seem, on first acquaintance at least, to be rather a pen of animals than a city of men, a place amazing if you will, but disgusting in its amazement, whose life is merely life, without dignity, beauty or reticence, or any of the nobler conventions of civilization; a place so restless and noisy and confused that it might be pandemonium, so parvenu and second rate that it might be one of those new American cities upon the Pacific slope. Excerpt from Naples in 1799 N writing the following pages the intention of the author has been to present to English readers a sketch of the men who formed the Neapolitan Republic of I 799, together with sufficient outline of their surroundings, and of the condition of the kingdom of Naples at the close of the eighteenth century, to make their position clear. The writer can lay no claim to original research, and has merely endeavoured to bring within the knowledge of English readers, who have not the means of studying the ample Italian literature of this subject, that side of the drama of I 799 which English literature has been too apt to ignore. This drama has been generally regarded in England as a mere background to an episode in the life of Nelson and when it has been handled at all has often been handled with heat, often with gross unfairness and gross ignorance, or at best presented in chips and frag ments which do no justice to the subject, however they may serve to illustrate the argument of the moment - an argument which generally assumes Nelson to be the person principally concerned. By means of contemporary evidence, letters, diaries, and so forth, with which the patient industry and research of Italian writers have so amply furnished the present generation, the chief actors in those scenes live, move. Excerpt from Italy: Rome and Naples, Florence and Venice There are an infinity of entr'actes in travelling. These are the dull hours of the day - getting up, going to bed, waiting at stations, between visits, and when you are weary and indifferent. At such times you look at things on the dark side. There is but one remedy, and that is a pencil and taking notes. You must regard this as a journal with some of its pages missing, and moreover, entirely personal. I do not pretend that what pleases me will please you, and still less that it will please others. Heaven preserve us from legislators in matters of beauty, pleasure, and emotion! What each one feels is peculiar and appropriate to him self like his nature; my experiences will depend upon what I am.
