Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE PACIFICATOR Sik Henry Lawrence, 1806-1857. Henry Lawrence's father was a man who had done good service in India as a soldier; of his six sons, four also did distinguished service in the same country, and two, John and Henry, did specially conspicuous service. - Henry was born in Ceylon, and after a short school career in that island was sent to England, where he joined the Military Academy of Addiscombe. Having obtained a commission in the Bengal Artillery, he went out to India to join his regiment at the early age of seventeen. He arrived in India in time to take part in the first Burmese war: thus he early obtained practical experience of military problems, and learnt many lessons which were to be of inestimable value to him in later years; it was at this period of his life that he had his first experience of a military mutiny: three Sepoy regiments had demurred to the sea-trip to Burmah, as prejudicial to their caste, and one of them, having refused to lay down its arms when ordered to do so, was promptly fired into by the British artillery by orders of the officer commanding. The mutiny was suppressed, but food for reflection was provided for Lawrence's mind as to its original cause, and he could not help coming to the conclusion that the exercise of more thought and judgement on the part of the military authorities might have prevented it altogether. The chief military event of the war was the capture of Arakan, in effecting which many hardships had to be undergone: the troops suffered much throughout the campaign from a very violent type of fever: Lawrence himself became so ill that he was invalided home, and was ordered to go by the longest sea route, so as to get the full benefit of the voyage; as it was, the effects of the fever never real...

Excerpt from Sketches of Rulers of India, Vol. 4 By which the average home-keeping Englishman justifies to himself the indulgence of sitting down and casting dust on his head whenever he looks back upon the exploits of his countrymen in India, an attitude which is observed by foreigners with suspicion or impatience according to their insight into English character. Yet it would be easy to prove that one important reason why the English so rapidly conquered India was this, that the countries that fell into our hands had no nationalities, no long-seated ruling dynasties, or ancient aristocracies, that they had in fact no solid or permanent organization of any kind, but were politically treasure trove at the disposal of the first, who, having found, could keep. The best proof that in these countries the English destroyed no organized political institutions is the historical fact that in the coun tries which they annexed none such had been left for them to destroy. On the other hand, where indigenous political institutions of long standing still exist it is the English who have saved them from destruction.
