Jede Stadt des romischen Reiches besass als offentliche Korperschaft eigene Sklaven, die eine Vielzahl von Funktionen ausubten. Die offentlichen Sklaven bildeten das administrative Ruckgrat der Stadte, v. a. in der Finanzverwaltung und im Archivwesen bis hin zum Archivvorstand, wurden zu handwerklich-technischen Tatigkeiten eingesetzt, operierten als Hilfspolizei oder dienten in stadtischen Heiligtumern. Durch die Sammlung und Erschliessung der weit verstreuten lateinischen und griechischen Inschriften und die Auswertung bislang unberucksichtigter literarischer Quellen gelingt es dem Autor, zahlreiche Tatigkeitsbereiche der offentlichen Sklaven zum ersten Mal aufzudecken. Gleichzeitig wird mit der systematischen Erfassung ihrer Funktionen eine Forschungslucke geschlossen. Auch die gesellschaftliche Position der offentlichen Sklaven wird hier zum ersten Mal analysiert. Es lasst sich zeigen, dass einige von ihnen hohes Ansehen genossen und eine erstaunlich selbstverstandliche Aufnahme in die Reihen der stadtischen Oberschichten fanden.

Enslaved persons were ubiquitous in the first- and second-century CE Roman Empire, and early Christian texts reflect this fact. Yet the implications of enslaved presence in religious practices are under-examined in early Christian and Roman history. Enslaved Leadership in Early Christianity argues that enslaved persons' roles in civic and religious activities were contested in many religious groups throughout ancient cities, including communities connected with Paul's legacy. This power struggle emerges as the book examines urban spaces, inscriptions, images, and literature from ancient Ephesos and its environs. Enslaved Leadership breaks new ground in analyzing archaeology and texts-asking how each attempts to persuade viewers, readers, and inhabitants of the city. Thus this book paints a complex picture of enslaved life in Asia Minor, a picture that illustrates how enslaved persons enacted roles of religious and civic significance that potentially upended social hierarchies privileging wealthy, slave-holding men. Enslaved persons were religious specialists, priests, and leaders in cultic groups, including early Christian groups. Yet even as the enslaved engaged in such authoritative roles, Roman slavery was not a benign institution nor were all early Christians kinder and more egalitarian to slaves. Both early Christian texts (such as Philemon,1 Timothy, Ignatius' letters) and the archaeological finds from Asia Minor defend, construct, and clarify the hierarchies that kept enslaved persons under the control of their masters. Enslaved Leadership illustrates a historical world in which control of slaves must continually be asserted. Yet this assertion of control raises a question: Why does enslaved subordination need to be so frequently re-established, particularly through violence, the threat of social death, and assertions of subordination?

Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1,0, Universität Rostock, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Einleitung Wer sich mit der Sklaverei in der römischen Kaiserzeit beschäftigt, hat es nicht mit dem Sklaven (servus) zu tun, sondern mit verschiedenen Sklaven. Denn ihre Welt war nur bezüglich weniger Faktoren einheitlich. 1 Die prägnanteste Eigenschaft, die alle Sklaven zusammen verband, war ihr rechtlicher Status. Dieser grenzte sie streng von den Freien in der Gesellschaft ab und machte sie zum Besitz Fremder. Hingegen gab es eine große Anzahl von Merkmalen, welche die Sklaven als eine heterogene Gruppe innerhalb der römischen Gesellschaft charakterisierte. So unterschieden sich ihre Lebens- und Arbeitssituationen sowie ihre wirtschaftliche Lage teilweise deutlich voneinander, wobei ein großes Gefälle zw ischen Stadt und Land vorhanden war. Daher hatte es keinesfalls automatisch zu bedeuten, dass sich ein Mensch der Antike in einer elenden Lage befand, wenn er ein Sklave war. Nicht alle Sklaven mussten „Sklavenarbeit“ ve rrichten, denn sie wurden für die unterschiedlichsten Arbeiten eingesetzt.2 Die Spannweite reichte dabei von Sklaven, die in Bergwerken schuften mussten bis zu solchen, die als Geschäftsführer tätig waren. Da im Römischen Reich fast jeder arbeitete und Sklaven in nahezu allen Tätigkeitsbereichen vertreten waren, teilten sie ihr Berufsleben nicht selten mit Freigeborenen (ingenui) und Freigelassenen (liberti). Auch nach der Arbeit waren Sklaven teilweise in das Alltagsleben der Freien integriert. In den Städten hatten sie Zutritt zu Kulten, Massenunterhaltungen und Freizeit-Aktivitäten, an denen auch Freie teilnahmen, vorausgesetzt sie erhielten die Erlaubnis ihres Herrn (dominus).3 Zudem waren viele Sklaven äußerlich nicht von den Freien zu unterscheiden, da das einfache Volk die gleiche Kle idung trug wie sie.4
